Michael Egan
« on: Saturday 03 August 24 16:00 BST (UK) »
Hi all, I have a relative, Michael Egan, who was born in Roscommon about 1851. He married Ann McDonnell, a widow 9 years his senior, who's maiden name was Ward. They married sometime just before 1870, when they had their first child in Farnworth, Bolton.

I know it may be a long shot as I have no other siblings or earlier generations at the moment but i was wondering how I may go about looking for and ordering a birth certificate for him?

Thanks, Luke

Are you looking to find his parents?

The marriage certificate for him and Ann should give you his fathers name/occupation to start off with.
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Hi Milliepede,
I'm looking for any information at all from Ireland (inc how to apply for a birth certificate). I don't have a copy of the marriage certificate so far, I haven't been able to find one yet.
Thanks, Luke

Irish genealogy can be very difficult, as civil registration of births did not start until 1864, so there will not be a birth certificate for him. If he was baptised Catholic, then there is a chance that he has a surviving baptism record, but there is no guarantee. Non-Catholic baptism records from this time are also hard to find.

Ann married her first husband Michael McDonnell in 1860 - the document reads:

Ann Ward of Dorrents Island, daughter of William Ward & Ann Higgins to Michael McDonnell of Quay Street, son of Bartholomew McDonnel & Mary Anne Gannon. In St John’s Catholic Church, Calry, Sligo by Thomas O’Connor. Witnessed by Martin Brien and Mary Higgins on 18th February 1860.

1871 entry is Hagan but no McDonnell children which is strange if Ann was previously married in 1860.

Son William’s birth reg shows mmn Ward but if you can’t find a McDonnell/Egan marriage - how do you know she was a widow?
