Edward J Sullivan
« on: Wednesday 07 August 24 16:38 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to trace a relative called Edward J Sullivan , his parents Elisabeth Carey from Rathkeale Co Limerick , Ireland married John Sullivan from Shanagolden Co Limerick Ireland in 1860. They emigrated to the US probably after the married their son Edward rose to political prominence and was recognized by President Theodore Roosevelt.
I made contact with the Theodore Roosevelt Center at Dickinson state University and they share personal letters between President Roosevelt and Edward whom the president awarded him with a consular appointment in Turkey. I understand Edward moved to California and worked in real estate but am hoping you can help trace his career path from ~1908, I have share the correspondence between President Roosevelt and Edward or the article from the New York times detailing his consular appointment

California Digital Newspaper Collection

https://cdnc.ucr.edu/

search for "Edward J. Sullivan"
the quotes will cut down on matches to people named Edward or who have J in their name.

many articles, attached sample is from
Los Angeles Herald, Volume XL, Number 251, 21 August 1914

this might be him. says b 1863, Ireland, d November 19, 1918 1928, buried Calvary Cemetery, Los Angeles
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/236638708/edward-j.-sullivan

If that is him, he didn't get much of an obituary - from an OCR scan
. SULLIVAN. November 19, Edward J. Sullivan, a native of Limerick, Ireland, aged 55 years.
Funeral Thursday. November 22, at 8:15 a.m. from chapel of Cunningham O'Connor, 1031 South Grand avenue. Requiem mass at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Ninth and Green streets, at 9 a.m. Interment, Calvary.

Note: Nov 1918 was the first wave of the Spanish Influenza.

corrected. see following posts.

Sincere thanks again for your help , Edwards parents married in 1860 so the dates would seem to tie and I received correspondence that he was active in real estate in California but you are correct its a fairly unassuming obituary for someone who had a decorated career.

On the gravesone it states 1863-1928 so maybe he died from some other cause, interesting that no family are mentioned on the obituary either , I was wondering if he married and had a family , also jus t to outline connection , Edward's mother Elisabeth was a sister of my great great grandfather Cornelius Carey (1849-1908)
