Thomas Graham

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to get further back on my Graham line and am stuck on a certain Thomas Graham.
Thomas was born around 1790 in Scotland. He married Jean Hamilton on the 18 Nov 1809 in Barony and was said to be of that parish. At this time and for the rest of his life he worked as a cabinet maker. His first child with Jean was born five months prior on the 10 Jun 1809 in Barony.

He had at least two other children in Scotland who I have been unable to find baptism records for, Thomas in around 1814 and John in around 1815. His next daughter, Jean, was born 17 Apr 1819 in Liverpool. Thomas and Jean's children after this were all born in Liverpool and listed here:

- Agnes b. 1820
- Ellen b. 1822
- Margaret b. 1824 d. before 1828
- William b.1826
- Margaret b. 1828

Jean died on 24 Feb 1849 in Liverpool and Thomas married Mary Utteridge on 17 Jun 1854. Here he lists David Graham as his father with the occupation of husbandman. Thomas died on the 23 Mar 1862.

Based on the Scottish naming pattern I suspect that his mother's name was Agnes unless there were more children born in Scotland or they did not strictly follow the pattern.

There are two baptisms registered on ScotlandsPeople for a Thomas Graham born between 1780 and 1794 to David Graham:

GRAHAM
THOMAS
DAVID GRAHAM/MARGARET DEWEAR FR459 (FR459)
M
18/02/1781
414
20 / 161
Carnock

GRAHAM
THOMAS
DAVID GRAHAM/BARBARA BLACKWOOD FR66 (FR66)
M
20/02/1791
848
10 / 72
Sanquhar

The Thomas born to David and Barbara fits better with his suspected birthdate but I have not been able to definitively prove their connection beyond a suspicion.

I think finding his known children's baptisms in Scotland would be helpful.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Scotland's People has a record of John, son of Thomas Graham and Jean Hamelton, born 22 May 1815 and baptised 4 June 1815 in Newton Stewart Relief Church.

I don't think it's safe to assume that Thomas' mother's name was Agnes, because there's a long enough gap between David b 1809 and Thomas b c 1814 for at least two more children.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thanks for that find. I agree regarding Thomas' mother's name.

I had a search of Thomas Graham in "Other Church Registers Baptisms" on ScotlandsPeople and found that the son of David Graham and Margaret Dewear was christened at Dunfermline Associate.

Considering that Thomas' own children were christened with the Uniting Church (his children in Liverpool were also baptised at the Scotch Secession Church) could this be evidence in favour of this being the correct individual?

It's possible but not, in my opinion, sufficient proof.
