NLI Baptism Records for Killukin/Killucan, Rosscommen - Help please
« on: Saturday 24 August 24 16:33 BST (UK) »
Hello Rootschatters,

On NLI I've found a Baptism for Peter Cunningham 4th Oct 1825 in Killukin, Rosscommen.  Parents Peter and Mariae McNiece

Killucan | Microfilm 04606 / 05
Diocese of Elphin | County of Roscommon
Baptisms
24 Jun. 1811 to 27 Jun. 1833

I've noticed that there are 2 Killucan/Killukin in Rosscommen.  One near Strokestown and one near Carrick-on Shannon.

Does anyone know which Killucan/Killukin these records reflect?  I've checked/scrolled from 1820-1828 for any possible siblings, but couldn't find any.

Any help would be appreciated.

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi aghadowey, that was the record set I was searching (thanks for the link).

So, you're suggesting it's neither of those places?

When I search on Killucan, it brings me east of Mullingar.  Is that the place you consider these records to be from?  Peter died in 1885 in Widnes, which was then in Lancashire (now Cheshire I think).  On all census from 1841 when he married his wife Roseanna Murphy in Glasgow, Scotland, his birthplace is just indexed as 'Ireland'.

As always, I appreciate your help,

Kit

Use the link to Irish Ancestors on the bottom of the main parish page to see places in the parish.

Hi Sinann,

Thanks for the advice.  It took me a little while to move around and find the correct link to the information, but I got there in the end.

I'll continue to try and find out more about this family but I don't think there will be much available to confirm they are mine.  DNA isn't helping much either!

If you can bear with me, another daft lassie question?

Does that mean that the family resided in either:

Kilcolagh (County Roscommon)
Killukin (Boyle) (County Roscommon)
Killummod (County Roscommon)
Tumna (County Roscommon)

As these are shown as 'civic parishes relating to Killucan Catholic Church'

Also, is anyone aware of the location of the Church and whether it's still standing?  I can see a Cemetery in Killukin and the aerial map shows what could be a dilapidated building?

Thanks in advance.

Many of these Catholic parishes covered a number of civil parishes and had more than one church, several of the alternate names for the parish suggests at least two : 'Killukin and Killumod', 'Killucan and Ballinameen'

athacliath62,

Thanks for that information.  I haven't done much research using Irish records although 3 of my grandparents came from Irish roots and moved to Lancashire.  I was hoping to find other children born to Peter & Mary but didn't see any.

I only know where one line is from (Kilrush, Ferns, County Wexford) for my Ronan (GGM).  For my Kelly side 'Mullingar' was on the 1911 E&W Census but I don't know if that is the town or a wider area?  My other Carson side came over to Lancashire from Belfast but I think their origins are Scottish.

Edit: This Cunningham side is my maternal Grandmother whose mum was a Daley from Galway.

Back again  ;D

Ancestry has what they state is a basic transcript of the record from NLI.

Name   Petrum Cunningham
Gender   Male
Baptism Date   4 Oct 1825
Baptism Place   Kilcooley, Roscommon, Ireland
Father
Petri Cunningham
Mother
Mariae Mc Niece
FHL Film Number   989741

How do they 'know' the Baptism Place is Kilcooley? Is Kilcooley the small 5-6 mile area near Tulsk or is there a larger area which has the same name?

Appreciate any help/advice.
