RASC

Does anyone know where the RASC were in 1921?

The man I'm looking for was listed on his young daughter's death certificate in 1921 as "Driver, Royal Army Service Corp (Horse Keeper)" but he wasn't with the family in the 1921 census, just a few weeks earlier.

Were the RASC in barracks somewhere in the UK or abroad?

The RASC are attached to a whole variety of different units. You need to apply to the. National Archives for his service records to find out where he was.  Records for people serving after 1920 are in the process of being transferred from the MOD to the NA so you might have a long wait.

The simple answer is that they were everywhere where the British Army was. In particular in the British Army of the Rhine, Palestine, India, South Africa and the other British Colonies. That said, since his trade was horse keeper, he is more likely to have been in one of the places where the British presence was larger, such as BAOR or Palestine. You don't mention what kind of engagement your man was on, for instance, if this was for the duration of the war, which didn't officially end for enlistment purposes until Jan 1920. There was then a  programme for returning the war enlisted personnel to civilian life which favoured those who were older and had had served for the longest, over the conscripts who only joined towards the end of the war, perhaps due to only reaching the age of 18 in the last 2 years of the war.

Unfortunately, that mention on the death certificate is the only record I have.
I haven't been able to find him in the military records on Ancestry or FindMyPast.
He would have been 43 in 1921 so definitely not a youngster!

Have you found him in the absent voters registers for 1919 or 1920?
