Hi all,
I am trying to find death records for my great grandmother, and having zero luck. She was born in 1852 in Dartmouth, Devon, England. We know she was still alive for the 1911 census, but she disappears after that. I've searched both Ancenstry and FamilySearch.

I'm also trying to find her husband's—my great Grandfather— grave site, as I am planning a trip in the next 2 years and I'd love to visit his grave. He was born in 1861 and died in 1936 in Essex, England.
I tried to search FindAGrave.com, but it looks like you have to search every cemetery separately. Ugh.
Any suggestions on how to go about this?  Thank you so much for your help!

If you could give their names, occupations, and locations at last sightings, locations of children, etc we can look.
Have you looked on Free BMD?  https://www.freebmd.org.uk/
Did you check for probates?
1921 census?

Was there a funeral notice in a newspaper?
Remembering too, that cremation is a possibility.

Try Findmypast, Essex Burial Index. 1590-1950.

Your  great grandfather should be listed on there.
We need the names  of your  great grandparents  to help you.
Announcements in newspapers are another way to find them.

Thanks normamac and mckha489,

here is the info:

Carl Williams Petersen
1861–1936

Last occupation: Domestic Machinery Dealer. Last known residence: Wood Green, Middlesex, England

Birth 21 JAN 1861 • Totnes, Devon, England

Death 4 MAR 1936 • Essex, England

Louisa Treby
1852–

Birth 16 JUL 1852 • Dartmouth, Devon, England

Death Unknown

Petersen children: Thomas George, Carl Ernest, Ethel Mary

I was able to find evidence of probate on Carl, but nothing on Louisa.
I thought the 1921 census was lost! If not can you advise me how to find it?
Nothing came up in Findmypast, Essex Burial Index. 1590-1950.
I will try Free BMD, and newspapers—thank you!

Have you just got Carl's probate information from the index, or have you seen the will itself? Sometimes wills contain instructions about where someone wishes to be buried.

Do you know if the family ever lived in Surrey? There's a Louisa Petersen of the right age who died in the Reigate district in 1917 (from FreeBMD). That might give you somewhere else to look for a burial. However....

I see from the probate index that Carl died in Halstead. From FreeBMD again, then if that 1917 death is correct, it looks as though he married a Lavinia Gardner in the Halstead district in 1920. She seems to have died in the Colchester district in 1955; her will went to probate, and the executors were Thomas George Petersen and his wife. I wonder if it mentioned Carl?

So, a few things to look into - I'll let others look for burials etc.

The 1921 census can be found on Find My Past. Carl can be found on that census.

It looks very much as Arthur K has said that he married for a second time in 1920 - in Halstead, Essex to Lavinia Gardner.

The only possible death I can see for Louisa between 1911 and 1920 is showing on the Groindex  as Louisa Petersen ( death age 65) Jul - Sep 1917 in Reigate, Surrey. It might be worth obtaining a digital image of this death to see if it is the correct one. ( I note that the surname for this death has been transcribed as Peterson on FindMyPast.).

William
Dent (Haltwhistle and Sacriston), Bell and Jetson (Haltwhistle), Postle, Ward, Longstaff, Purvis, Manners, Parnaby and Hardy (Co. Durham), Kennedy and McRobert (Banffshire), Reid(Bathgate), Watson (Wemyss), Graham (Libberton), Sandilands (Carmichael), Munro (Dingwall)

I am new to replying here Arthurk, so I hope you see this—thank you so much for this research! I have not seen the will, and I haven't seen any evidence of them living in Surrey, but this could be her.
