Banns 10 years before marriage?
« on: Sunday 01 September 24 16:03 BST (UK) »
Hiii!

I have a couple, Richard Webb and Eliza Godwin who seem to have banns registered (i think?) 10 years before they actually married? I've never seen this before?

Has anyone else had this before?

I've seen a 4-year gap between Banns and Marriage.

Then they married in two different churches a week apart, just to be sure (even had the same witness at the second).  1850s Warwickshire

Hardwickes's Marriage act stated that a marriage had to take place within 3 months of the banns being read.

I would check for further banns or a licence.

They appear in the 1851 censuses as living with their families so maybe  they split up and then got back together later on...

I know Richards sister, Ann and Eliza's brother, James were married in 1840 and he disappeared around mid - late 40's leaving her with several children so perhaps they thought that a marriage wasn't best suited at this time or they simply were sticking up for their siblings and fell out!

Guess there are just some thing records can't tell us!

Check when the parents died (all 4 of them!).
My grandfather married in August 1897; his father died in June 1897!
He was 21 when he married (birth in February), and I was told his father didn't approve of the marriage.
