Hi all,
I'm looking for the death certificates of Michael McAteer and his wife Mary McAteer (nee Fearon). They lived in the Foughiletra/Dromintee areas (Co Armagh), and bounced back and forth between there and England (Birkenhead and Bootle, both near Liverpool). In Ireland Michael worked as a farmer/labourer, and in England he was a dock labourer. I have a fair bit of info on them, but cannot find either of their death records.
What I do know about them:
Michael McAteer was bapt. 7 Jul 1853 in Dromintee, residence Upper Foughill
Mary Fearon was bapt. 25 Jul 1857 in Dromintee, residence Foughill Etra
They married in Dromintee on 4 Jan 1884.
Son Laurence was born in Birkenhead, England 19 Apr 1885
Son Mathew born Faughill 28 Mar 1887
Son Peter born Foughil 27 Jan 1889
Son John born Foughilotra 18 Jan 1892
Son Patrick born Foughil, 6 Jan 1896
Dau Mary Eliza born Bootle, England 8 Feb 1899
Son Thomas Michael born England, circa 1901 (from census)
Dau Elizabeth born ? circa 1902
Dau Christina born Upper Faughill, 24 Dec 1903+1 other child who's name/info is currently unknown.
- Michael was living in Bootle on the 1891 England census with his 18 y/o brother in law Mathew Feeron. Gives his age as about 30.
- 1901 Census Mary and her children are living in James St, Camlough, Armagh
I can't find Michael on either the Ireland or England 1901 Census. But an electoral register shows him in Bootle in 1901. - 1911 Census Mary again is living with her kids in Foughilotra. Again, no husband Michael. I can't find him on either census again.
This is the last I see of them.
I know they lived at 19 Johnstone Street and 31 Lyons Street in Bootle. I know from family anecdotes that Mary was a lodging house keeper, and Michael seemed to own the two above properties.
1911 Census says that the couple had 10 children, and by 1911, only 5 of them were living.
Therefore only 5 of them could possibly sign their parent's death certs. Those are Laurence, Peter, John (who dies in ww1 in 1916), Mary, and Thomas. There are a fair few deaths in Newry for Michael McAteers but none seem to ring true, mostly all being in Ballyholland (where they never lived) and having children with different names sign as informants.
When their son John dies in 1916 it states "
Son of Michael and Mary McAteer, of Flurrybridge Post Office, Co. Armagh." Unsure if this would indicate they were both still living at this point as is doesn't mention them being "late" etc.
Ramble over - can anyone find MY Michael and Mary McAteer? It's possible they died in either England or Ireland. Michael drops off the map in 1903, and Mary in 1911. Deaths would be at any point after that.
Thanks for your time!
Ali
