1911 Scotland Census
« on: Friday 06 September 24 13:07 BST (UK) »

I have a few Census records I would like to check...
A little Irish girl who's Mum died and was believed to be packed off to Scotland to live with
her dad's family.
Specifically
Scotland Census 1911 -> County Lanark --> Carluke --> Burns --> female Age 6 - 9
(She became a Nun - Sr. Bernadette Burns so her birth Forename is lost.)

I don't mind investing in credits to view the records on Scotland's people but will I get to see all the members of the household? As is the case in the Irish Censuses.

There are precious few Censuses in Ireland but at least they are free!

Hi,
I've had to check out Scotland 1911 census myself and you will get to see the whole page that includes your household. You can also move forwards and backwards from the page you are on, but that will cost extra credits.

From the Scotland's People site

"Each search result includes a . link. This opens a digital image of the relevant page in the enumeration book. You have options to 'browse forwards', 'browse backwards' and 'view header (free)'. The header contains digital images of the preliminary section of the enumeration book including the title page, description of the enumeration district and summary statistics compiled by the enumerator. They are free to view."

There are 3 females with the surname Burns in Carluke in 1911. Catherine & Elizabeth, both age 6, & Eleanor age 9.

Elizabeth is in the household of James, 41 & Mary Burns, 33.

Catherine with John, 29 & Catherine Burns, 30

The 6yr old Catherine in Carluke is indexed in household with a John L Burns aged 29 and a Catherine Burns aged 30, if this helps you decide whether or not to buy some credits to view full details.

The child Eleanor Burns is indexed with 5 other Burns children aged 0-14yrs.

Didn't notice info already posted in reply immediately above (or it was added after, and so posts crossed).

Do you not have the child's birth record in Ireland, given you seem to know who her parents were?

Should be available, free, at https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp

Yes I'm an old hand with GRONI searches and Genealogy.ie, and Roots but she doesn't show up there.
Very unusual!

Dad was Andrew Burns and mum was Ellen Magee both Antrim people.
They married in 1901 but Ellen died age 34 of TB in 1905. I can find no children for them in that period.
Most unusual!
I am looking on behalf of a relative on the Magee side who remembers her grandmother's cousin being introduced to her many years ago as Sr. Bernadette Burns.

Bernadette was in a Convent in Newry, Co. Down.

PS Should add...
Her Grandfather was Collins Burns M. Ann Wallace, 1870, Carluke Parish, Lanark.

Many thanks for this.
i'm wondering does the Scotland Census not give the place of birth? This should be  Belfast Ireland for the little girl.

Mmmm...I wonder if the relative may have mis-remembered the details of the meeting/story?

This is very likely a red herring, however stranger things have happened so I will post. In 1985, a Wishaw newspaper carried a story about a former Shottsonian, as they put it (ie someone from Shotts), who was on holiday in the area. Unfortunately no age mentioned.

Anyhow, she was a nun, Sister Mary Bernadette (Jane Burns), who left Shotts in 1933. She was in the Order of the Poor Clare's who were based in NI. She seems to have taught in a number of locations, mainly in Newry though.

The Sister was visiting from Newry and a Mass/celebration was being held for her 50 years teaching service. A Burns nephew (James Burns), was involved in same.

If nothing else, worth a check even if only to rule it out.
