EDWARD WARDROPPER TURNER (b 1912, Sunderland)
« on: Saturday 07 September 24 21:43 BST (UK) »
Good evening all.
I'm looking to find the aforementioned gentleman on a 1921 census (in Sunderland ???). I have found him on the 1939 register living at 71 Melville Road in the Willesden area of London with his wife Elizabeth (nee Maskell) and their 2 children Violet and Derek (blanked out). The family later moved back to Sunderland.
I believe his father was John Wardropper Turner who was also born in Sunderland. I have been unable to find 1891, 1901, 1911 or 1921 census or 1939 register records for him so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Jim

In 1921 mother and children are in Chatham, Kent. There is a John W Turner b 1886 Sunderland, he is in the Royal Navy in 1921. Also aboard ship in Plymouth Reg District in 1911.

JWT joined the navy in 1902 and can be found in Plymouth on the 1911 census as a stoker.

Edward has a crew of siblings, all with the Wardropper middle name. One, Lily, was registered in Medway district in 1921 - matches JWT's naval records which connect him to Chatham. I think if you search for Edward Turner b Sunderland in Medway  you may have success

It seems that Edward may have named his daughter Violet for his sister who died in an accident in 1916.

Evidence that this is the same family:

John W Turner m Sarah A Brown, Q1 1911 Sunderland
Edward W Turner, birth, 1912 Q4 Sunderland, mmn Brown [1939 register has birth date 28/9/12]
Violet W Turner, birth, 1914 Q3 Sunderland, mmn Brown
Violet W Turner, death, 1916 Q3, Sunderland, age 2

The article says that the father of this Violet Wardropper Turner is a leading stoker. Looking at JWT's navy record he was indeed a stoker around that time (Stoker Petty Officer on HMS Cornwallis). In fact, he was still with HMS Cornwallis in January 1917 when she was torpedoed and sunk off Malta (most of the crew survived).

Many thanks for the information in previous messages.
Alan's info fits in nicely with the bits I already had from Derek who paid us a visit last Monday and prompted this topic. He recalled Edward having 2 brothers (Robert and John) and 2 sisters (couldn't remember names). I now firmly believe that Violet was one of them (his sister is also called Violet).
I have checked out Mabel's suggestion (Lily) but the only one I can find seems to be a different household in Gillingham. I've tried a general search for births with Turner / Brown but have drawn a blank. I would love to confirm the missing child before I give Derek a call to confirm the validity as best he remembers.
Still looking for census records prior to 1911 for Edward's parents John Wardropper Turner and Sarah Ann Brown and their parents .
Any further information would be greatly received.

birth registration
Lily W Turner
Q4 1921 Medway
mmn Brown

Correct place, correct mmn, and a W for a middle initial.

When you say that you found Lily in Gillingham, when was that? This Lily was registered after the 1921 census.

Lily is with Sarah A, John and Robert in 1939 in Willesden. She wasn't yet born at the time of the 1921 census.

Only searches between 1910 - 1920 for birth's.
Now found 1939 register which confirms previous messages.
