Michael McLoughlin 1903 died Palestine WW2
« on: Tuesday 10 September 24 23:28 BST (UK) »
I’m trying to trace what became of Michael McLoughlin born 1903 Castlebar, Mayo. His parents were John McLoughlin and Norah Mullin. Family history recalls him as a career Soldier who was killed by a sniper in Palestine at the end of WW2. I don’t know what regiment he was in but have a photo of him in uniform. The only record of a Michael McLoughlin death in Palestine is for a constable in the Palestine Police dated 29/07/1941 at Jerusalem and the associated grave at Mount Zion Catholic Cemetery. No service numbers are recorded but the age is right. Is there any way I can find out more information/ full death record to establish if this is the same person?
Reid in Roxburghshire, McLoughlin in Castlebar, Mullin in Mayo,
Golden in Newry, Garvey in Belfast, Keane in Dublin.

There are two 1941 Michael McLoughlin deaths on the CWGC site, but neither in Palestine.

Then under McLoughlan there is the chap you have discovered, who was in the Palestine Police:

https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/2220590/michael-mcloughlan/

although the Consular death certificate for him, only registered in 1947, has McLoughlin. Apparently his residence at time of death was Jericho. No details of family.

Some background info on the Palestine Police Force:

https://www.theauxiliaries.com/palestine/palestine-police.html

Can you post the photo you have, so folks on the board can hopefully assist further?

The cap badge and flaming grenade collar badges indicate Royal Artillery.
The lady is wearing a 1920s style cloche hat.

There was a Michael McLaughlin found in the Royal Artillery Attestations 1883-1942, who served in WW2 with a Service number 1779811.

I checked out the 1921 census. The Michael McLoughlan record is a soldier in the Connaught Rangers born Westport, Mayo. My relative was born in Castlebar but spent a large proportion of his childhood in Swineford therefore looks unlikely to be the same person. Thanks for searching.

I checked out the attestation which was dated 1941. Unfortunately there is no date or place of birth.

The 1911 census has him living with his grandmother, Mary Mullin in Collagh, Meelick, Mayo
