Census 1851/61 Kendal - Sill
« on: Tuesday 13 September 05 09:58 BST (UK) »
I am trying to establish the birth of William Sill, he says that he was born in Blackburn but does not appear on the 1851 census there.  I know that he had a brother Leonard b 1845 and possibly a brother John 1846, Robert 1848 and Elizabeth 1850.  Can anyone spot them on the 1851 census?  The latter two were christened at Grayrigg, the first two in Orton.
It is possible that the parents were John and Elizabeth Sill.

Fingers crossed!

Cheers
Brian

Thanks Keith
Perhaps my theory is quite wrong, I shall have to try and resort to parish records if there is no luck in 1851.

Hi Brian

there is an 1851 name index available on-line for the areas you mention at http://rolyg.members.beeb.net/CensusNames.htm

Orton is no.55 and Grayrigg is (I believe) part of no.61.  Both show families of Sills but no William.

You can search the full 1851 name index better by using google cache - try typing rolyg followed by the surname and the first name of the individual with no quotation marks used, and make sure you ask it to show all options.  You will also get a lot of false leads but quicker than searching through each page.

You may already have thought of it but no chance of the name being transcribed incorrectly? Sill could be written Cill or Syl or any number of ways.

Cheers Sue

Hi Brian
William is not with that family in 1851 either.  They are in Whinfell. HO 107 2270 F266 p5
I did find a William in 1851 who could be the right one but no siblinggs of those names.
HO 107 2270 F351 p1 Barnacre Lancs
Aron Sill Head 31 Farmer 28 acres emp 1 man b New Hutton Wmorland
Agness 24 b Stainton Wmorland
John 4 b Old Hutton
William 2 b Barnacre
Ann 1 b Barnacre
Alice Baines sister in law 17 b Firbank Wmorland
Edward Lanrey? 30 visitor b Witherslack

Could the later census be a mistranscription of Barnacre?

Hello again
Thanks for your suggestion, yes I tend to agree with you that a mistranscription is possible, but twice?  I notice on Ancestry that there is only one listed for 1847 and that is in Kendal.  Perhaps I really am barking up the wrong tree.  It is very frustrating!  Not having much good fortune at the moment as a death certificate on another line has thrown up another mystery...ah well such is life.  I could order the marriage certificate to Eleanor Fisher but I am reluctant to fork out £7 on one piece of information - they say Yorkshiremen are tight.

Cheers
Brian
