Help with 1672 baptism
« on: Sunday 06 October 24 02:44 BST (UK) »
I have a baptism entry I would like help to decipher please.  It is the first entry in the attached snip.  ..... Steventon ye daughter of Richard Steventon ...... wife was baptised ye 8 of October 1672.

Could anyone fill in what might be the first part of the entry and what his wife's name might be?  I'm thinking it could be Ed short for Edith??  It's from the PR of Wool.

Many thanks

I think it is Edith. All the letters are there. 'E.d.i.t.h'

I can't see it gives any name for this wife.
The second line just starts:
'& his wife........'

You can see the squiggle for '&' more clearly in the third entry 'Mathew Smith & Margery his....'

The first letter of the next word is the usual 'h', as in 'Edith' and 'Mathew'.
Then 'is', making 'his'

Sadly Goldie you are correct, I guess I'll never know his wife's name.  And thank you horsleydown for your correction to the month I had.

Thank you both very much.

I'm presuming you've looked for other children to Richard Steventon to see if his wife's name is mentioned............
And have you looked for the burial of a female Steventon after 1672 to see if it gives whether they were the wife of Richard Steventon? - we live in hope!

Yes, I've done all that.  The problem is, the pages are so faded and the awful writing doesn't help.  Half the page can be legible and the other half is so faded you can't make out a word.  It's weird, maybe it was the ink they used.

Also if you look at a transcription of the register eg the OPC page for Wool, Dorset, you can't tell that many pages have faded and are illegible and you think that the transcript is complete when it is far from it.  It was only when I looked at the online register myself that I realised how bad it was.

Thanks for your interest.

Where did you find the actual film for Wool?
I checked the familysearch catalogue, but it sent me off to some other records.
Have you got a film number, or perhaps they're on Ancestry or findmypast, in which case I don't have subscriptions.
Always like looking at old films!
I see Edith's name is transcribed as 'Stebbins' on familysearch (!), so looking for any version of Steventon doesn't work at all. To be fair, as you say, the image you posted from the register is not easy to put it mildly.

I found it on Ancestry.  FamilySearch haven't digitised the registers yet, they are still on film.

Well done finding the Stebbins entry.

Well done finding the Stebbins entry.

Familysearch blew their own trumpet some years ago saying all films would be digitised by 2020.
I have found lots still not done though.
Just a little behind!
