Margaret Venus Forrest b abt 1855

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with this brick wall I’ve come across. Margaret Venus Forrest b. approximately 1855 in Oldham. She marries Peter Walsh in 1877 at Oldham. The family are quite scattered.

1881 census (the only one I have her in) Margaret is living at Davison St in Oldham with her in-laws (Thomas & Mary Walsh) and two children. Her occupation is a “card room hand in cotton factory”. Peter is in a lodging house in Yorkshire. After that there’s no trace of her.

The family seem to have a brief stint in Hartlepool before going back to Oldham. Then in the 1891 census Peter is by himself with four children at Duckinfield, Cheshire. Then in 1901 he is in Stalybridge and in 1911 in West Saltney, Wales. All these times Margaret is not with him, but he’s listed as married.

Her birth /parents anre another thing entirely, there’s no GRO record/baptism, or childhood census.

Looks possible. 1881 census has her birthplace as Oldham Lancashire but plausible she could’ve been born Ireland?

There's a previous conviction and imprisonment in Knutsford for two months in 1891- says place of birth Hull but the description is identical, including a burn mark, scar and missing teeth

She's in trouble again in 1894  - born Hull 1852. Three months this time

Annoyingly the records I'm looking at don;t give offence details

I think this was her, I remember seeing a newspaper article — I think convinced of theft?

I wonder if the burn mark was from her husband

She then got 6 months in 1898 for larceny. Salford sessions - living in Manchester, working as a factory hand

I’m wondering if there’s no sign of her in later censuses 1891, etc because she was in prison and under her initials?

The burn sounds quite significant covering her forearm, elbow and upper arm. She's also described as deaf
