My 2x Great Grandfather (Herbert Oliver 1871-1944) was in the navy as an armourer. Is there anything to learn from these photographs?

Both photos are WWI.
He was an armourer which was a RN trade from about (1890 - 1948).
His rating was a petty officer as is indicated by the badge on his left arm.
I would suggest at the time of both photos that he was serving aboard the armed merchant cruiser HMS OROTAVA.
According to his service record his date of birth was 1875.
