The Annexation
« on: Monday 14 October 24 06:15 BST (UK) »
Hi folks,

I've been looking at a marriage certificate from 1825, and both parties are listed, followed by their place of residence — so-and-so of Tradeston and so-and-so of Gorbals, or both in Kingston or Hutchesontown, for example.

But one entry listed a couple both in the Annexation, and I wondered if anyone could give me some details on that location that I can't find online. I assume it's near to the others named above, but it doesn't ring a bell.

Thanks.

I'm not sure which one it would be but there were a number of Annexations during the 19th century ~

Quote
As the city grew in importance, the council began the process of annexing the surrounding suburbs. The early seventeenth-century boundary had remained unchanged for two hundred years but in the mid-nineteenth century various burghs, such as Anderston, Calton and Gorbals were taken over. At the end of the century the city swallowed even larger burghs such as Govan, Partick, Hillhead and Pollokshields and this process continued well into the twentieth century though some areas (such as Rutherglen which was annexed in 1975) are no longer within Glasgow. But local traditions still remain, particularly in the older parts of the city, even though the huge housing developments of the 1960s and 1970s led to large numbers of people leaving the traditional tenement areas for the peripheral housing schemes such as Drumchapel, Easterhouse and Castlemilk.

This is an early "annexation" of land around George Square from the Hutchesons - see snippet 1Annex.

Link to 1800 Act of Parliament - see para 1 which mentions "Hutcheson's Hospital".

Thanks for those replies. Very interesting. I assume 'the Annexation' referred to in the certificate I mentioned was nearby and possibly related to the area mentioned in that article.

As I've been researching my family tree, it's been a big surprise to me to see how many of them came from all over Scotland early in the 19th century and ended up living in the areas shown on the map — Laurieston, Tradeston, Kingston, Hutchesontown and Gorbals.

Just to clear up a bit of confusion for me when I find those names listed on certificates, would I be correct in thinking that those five areas were classed as being part of the larger Gorbals area itself at the time, and if so, were any other areas included as part of Gorbals?

Thanks for those links. The Strathbungo one won't load, unfortunately, but the Gorbals history one is a good read. Interesting to see that Hospital Street is there in the earliest days, as I had various branches of my family living along the street from then right up until 1970.
