Magdala Arms, High St Portsmouth
« on: Sunday 27 October 24 11:42 GMT (UK) »
I was just wondering if anyone has any old photos or information on the Magdala Arms Pub 144 High street, before it was demolished. It is now a modern building just off a large roundabout.
Thank you in advance.

Does this 1832 drawing resemble the Magdala - tho' house numbers may have changed in the meantime. Note the reference to absence of photos for this area.
It does mention its being a beerhouse in 1861.

Newspapers on line (FindMyPast or British Newspaper Archive) are a good source - but these are subscription/payment sites. You mighty find access to FindMyPast at your local library wchich may or may not include access to newspapers as part of the package..

Thank you, Hanes Teulu

You're welcome.
Have you tried googling "old photos portsmouth high street" or similar. It might deliver a section of the High St where you might get a glimpse of the pub.

Whichever, in the probable absence of a photo. does the 1832 "artist's impression" bear any resemblance to your memory of the place?

We have no memory of it as we had never seen it,hense wondering what it was like. I have been doing my husband`s  family tree and we discovered that his grandmother was born here and that his great grandparents lived here. We just thought she was just born portsmouth. So thank you the drawing is wonderful to see.
thank you
