Kate SMITH 1921 census and death year?
« on: Friday 01 November 24 16:26 GMT (UK) »
Hope you can help with this please.  Loose ends that are niggling!  If some of this is familiar, it's because of another thread that this follows on from https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?action=post;topic=878975.18;last_msg=7600975

I'm searching for 1921 census, any electoral register, and death records for Kate Smith, born 7 Feb 1872, Calne, Wilts, with the last record found (with the help of RC) in the 1939 register (albeit states born 1871), widow, house keeper.  She was listed with Agnes Arnould and Dinah Berryman, midwife, at 182 Well Hall Road, Eltham, Woolwich.  There is no change to her surname so she didn't remarry.

I found Kate in electoral registers for the same address, with Dinah, for 1936-8.  I have started to look up other Kate Smiths but so far they are all with a Mr Smith, so not my Kate.

I haven't found her in the 1921 census at all so guess there is a mistranscription or recording error.  Dinah was living in what was probably a nurses home/hostel in 1921.

Kate is in the 1911 census, in Bournemouth, widow, housekeeper, with her son Richard Norman Smith born 17 Jan 1897 (he worked abroad until 1940 on the Gold Coast- now Ghana, a trader). I have him coming and going, with his wife Nora Mary Buckell Channon nee Heaven  death registered Q1 1955 in Southampton).  Her other son Harold Vernon Smith (born 1898; died 24 years old in 1922 in a Gloucester mental hospital, buried in Gloucester).  Her husband was Norman Trevor Smith, of the innovative foundry/engineering Smith family in Nottingham, although he was a lace salesman. The family emigrated to the Cape, S Africa where he died soon after, in 1907, and Kate and sons then returned.

If anyone has a lightbulb moment to find Kate between 1911 in Bournemouth and 1936 in Woolwich that would be great.  Also after 1939, as the name is quite common so I can't pinpoint her death without a starting point of where she was living.  Dinah is still listed in the electoral registers at Well Hall Rd into the 40s, but not Kate.

I am close to being 100% sure of Richard Norman Smith's death.  The only Richard N Smith death from 1940 onwards on freeBMD is in Q3 1965 registered in Bristol (he had relatives there). Unfortunately freeBMD only shows the initial and no date of birth, and the GRO index doesn't show 1965 deaths.   Anyone know when they will appear?  However, on FindaGrave there is very likely the same person - a Richard Norman Smith record for Canford Cemetery, Bristol, died 8 Sep 1965 (aged 67–68), which would make him born 1897.  Also a couple of possibles in Australia.

I have contacted Bristol's cemetery services to see if they can give me a burial record/plot number, since I've also put in a FindaGrave photo request of the headstone, if there is one, but that would be a lot easier with a plot number.

Regarding Richard Norman, do you think he marries Norah Heaven and had a son in 1930.

Yes he married Norah Heaven in Q1 1925 in Woolwich but in all the passenger records back and forth I didn't spot a child so haven't looked for one in the birth records.  Will have to look now!

Added: I have RN Smith from Accra to Plymouth heading to mother in law's address (The Common, Woolwich) in Feb 1926.  Also in 1927 and 1928 but don't have the outward journeys. In 1930 and 1935 he arrived in Plymouth with Norah.

Re Richard Norman Smith burial plot, I've posted a separate query on the Glos board specifically for that.

SS I’ve just reviewed Richard Norman Smith’s aunt’s will. Alice Maude Mary Bertram nee Crook died in 1931 and in her will left most possessions to RN Smith who was in the Gold Coast at the time, and ‘if he died to his son’.

So yes perhaps there was/is a son and perhaps he stayed on in Africa? I’ll look for passenger records for him. I won’t name him as he could be still alive.

I have identified a son who may still be alive so won't name him.  Also his marriage and a child.

Back to Norah Mary Buckell Channon Smith (nee Heaven) death registered Q1 in Southampton (so may have died late 1954), can anyone identify a burial place please?  I suppose by 1955 cremations were becoming popular so there may not be a burial place of course.

I have found very few records over her adult lifetime presumably since she spent a lot of it abroad.
