Scene Shifter
« on: Friday 01 November 24 23:59 GMT (UK) »
My Great Grandfather Harold Curry (1891-1938) was a Scene Shifter at Barnard's Theatre, Woolwich on the 1911 census when he was 19. My question is if this was an ordinary job for a working class boy to do or if it might indicate a particular interest in the theatre. By the time he died he was a journeyman house decorator, and his WW1 army record describes him as a painter. The reason for my interest is that his son (my Grandfather) became very involved with an operatic society after WW2 and I was wondering if it might run in the family.

He seemed to be already out of this job by the time WW1 began.
