South Africa/Zimbabwe searching
« on: Tuesday 05 November 24 03:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I've never before attempted searching for South African or Zimbabwe genealogical data online, and was hoping that someone could offer some advice.
I am attempting to determine marriage or electoral records for persons now deceased but who migrated from England to South Africa in the 1950s and were resident there into the mid-1970s.  Are there resources available?
Any assistance greatly appreciated.
Thanks

There are some records for South Africa on FamilySearch.

Also some (although more limited) for Zimbabwe.
Milligan - Jardine – Glencross – Dinwoodie - Brown: (Dumfriesshire & Kirkcudbrightshire)
Clark – Faulds – Cuthbertson – Bryson – Wilson: (Ayrshire & Renfrewshire)
Neale – Cater – Kinder - Harrison: (Warwickshire & Queensland)
Roberts - Spry: (Cornwall, Middlesex & Queensland)
Munster: (Schleswig-Holstein & Queensland) and Plate: (Braunschweig, Neubruck & Queensland & New York)

Hi Stuart,
If they kept their British citizenship, there is a decent chance that their marriage(s) are indexed at FindMyPast (up to 1965). If you find them in the index, you will see the reference numbers needed to order their certificate from the GRO.

From experience, you need to search via the actual record set, not the general search page.
https://search.findmypast.co.uk/search-world-records/british-armed-forces-and-overseas-banns-and-marriages

Under the option for "Type", choose the consular option (unless they were military folk), or just leave it blank, if you don't mind sifting through a lot more returns.

Hope that helps!

Thank you for the link and suggestions.  I wasn't successful with the search, I'm grasping at straws as I know very little to start with.  But, having said that, I always appreciate the kindness of strangers.  So, thank you so very much for taking the time. ;D
Stuart

Aww, that's a shame they weren't there.
Have you tried looking in the British newspapers?  Their hometown may have run a snippet on a marriage?

Actually.....I did and found an engagement notice for their son, but I'm chasing his mother's remarriage....but, it helped track one of her children!  And you can't knock that!
