Matthew Moody b ca. 1758 Yorkshire - South Cave?
« on: Sunday 10 November 24 13:35 GMT (UK) »
Matthew Moody was my 5xGt Grandfather.

He was married to Ann Martin in South Cave on 23 March 1801.

He features on the 1841 census (HO107; Piece: 1217; Book: 10;  Folio: 20; Page: 33) where he is listed as age 82, a tailor in Market Place, South Cave. He is listed as being born in Yorkshire.

Matthew died in 1845 (1845 J Quarter in BEVERLEY Volume 23 Page 7) listed as age 87.

Please could someone see if they can find a baptism for Matthew?

I have found a baptism for an Elizabeth Moody:

Elizabeth, daughter of Matthew Moody of Faxfleet in the parish of South Cave, December 7th 1755.

A sister, maybe?

1845 Burial Register for South Cave, County of York.

Matthew Moody, Abode South Cave, Buried April 20th, Age 87, by H. F. Inman, Curate.

Perhaps widening out your line and seeing who was present at the Marriages (as witnesses) and also any Wills (if any) for this family etc., might give you some clues about family origin?

Also the Informant on some Death Certificates might be a relative.

Matthew Moody was my 5xGt Grandfather.

He was married to Ann Martin in South Cave on 23 March 1801.

Twenty 3d March 1801, by Banns
Matthew Moody of this Parish, Widower &
Anne Martin of y same Spinster
Both signed and she signed Ann Martins

In the Presence of:-
Octavia Mantle
Thos Glasby
Sarah Day
James Milner

Comments:

1) By Banns (so no Marriage Licence at the Borthwick Institute, York, to check)
2) Matthew Moody a Widower, so Moody has been married before.
3) In the Marriage Register there are 8 marriages in the Book opening and the names of those present as witneses are not repeated in the other 7 Marriages, which suggests those present are family and/or friends, neighbours or even co-workers, to the couple?
 ----------
Possible First Marriage, but Matthew did not sign himself? However, it does say "Taylor"

Marriage Register 1786 21st November at Hull H. T., by Banns
Matthew Moody of this Parish Taylor &
Elizabeth Beecham of the same Parish Spinster [she signed]
In the Presence of (wits both signed) :-
James Smith
Thomas Beecham

Hello Emma

Matthew Moody had a lot of children with Ann(e) at South Cave and he had also been married before as well.

Bringing surviving children forward into the Census, you might be fortunate and find another elderly Moody relative or a Cousin in a Census Household, with a Birthplace?
 ----------
Thomas Foster married Jane Moody, but as the James Mailes, Grandson, 1853 newspaper Death notice says Late Mr Thomas Foster, so Thos Foster who married Jane Moody died early.
 ----------
John Moody born South Cave (about 1820 from memory).

Married Doncaster, 11th July 1844 after Banns
John Moodie, full age, Blacksmith, South Cave, Father - Matthew Moody, Tailor.
Eliza Credland, full age, Spinster, --- , Corn Market, Father - Thomas Credland, Labourer.

In the Presence of us :- Emma Battie ; Charles Franklin

Only checked 1851
The "Visitor" and "House Servant" with John Moody, 30, born South Cave, in the 1851 Census at 9 Providence Row, Beverley, Yorkshire may be a Credland relative it seems, but spelt with an extra e ? ...

1851 Harriet Creedland, Visitor, U, 19, House Servant, born Lincolnshire, Wroot,

Same Birthplace as John Moody's Wife, Eliza Moody (nee Credland), born Wroot.
