Marjorie Grove in Leicester
« on: Tuesday 12 November 24 14:40 GMT (UK) »
After taking advantage over the weekend of the free access to FindMyPast records I have a couple of queries I would lke help with.

In 1921 an ancestor is listed as living at 4 Marjorie Grove in Leicester. I have carried out a quick search but can find no reference but Marjorie Street does appear on Google maps.

Does anyone with local knowledge have any idea where Marjorie Grove was please? Was it off Marjorie Street perhaps but has since been demolished?

Many thanks in advance for all offers of help

There are lots of newspaper items naming Marjorie Grove in Leicester newspapers. It is always referred to as “Marjorie Grove, Ross Walk”, or even “Marjorie Grove (Ross Walk)”. It looks to have been included in 1960s slum clearance. I still haven’t seen it on a map however.

In 1939 it is listed between Marjorie Street and Ross Walk. From 1901 to 1939 it is associated with only 5 or 6 households according to FindMyPast address search.

Certainly appears in 1939 war register following on from Marjorie Street. At no. 4 were Frank & Lois Hopewell.

I suspect it was something to do with the houses at the northernmost end of Ross Walk on this 1955 map, numbers 1a, 2a and/or 1,2,3,4 all on the east side of Ross walk.

The houses numbered 1-4 have disappeared by 1966:

Added: this seems now to be the site of the Waterfront Community Garden.

More: It was the subject of a compulsory purchase for clearance in 1964

23 March 1889: Leicester Advertiser: see Lot 2, but the whole item is informative. I think that this points to Marjorie Grove being the buildings labelled 1a and 2a on the map.

Many thanks Alan for your five replies to my query, I am very grateful you have taken the time to research and reply (including the links) to my message. I have printed off the maps showing the area as several other ancestors lived in the vacinity, Abbey Park Road, Westbourne Street, Olphin Street and one ancestor having The Birstall Arms in Birstall Street.  ;D

Thankyou SS for your reply. Sadly both residents of 4 Marjorie Grove had passed away by 1930 but I appreciate you checking the 1939 register  ;D
