Unsure how to proceed further with Irish family search
« on: Tuesday 12 November 24 16:03 GMT (UK) »
I have managed to get back to a 1901 census for my 2xgreat grandparents.
They were "Residents of a house 12 in Larganboy West (Bekan, Mayo)" and I have even managed to find their headstone in Ballyhaunis cemetery.

Edward Ganley
Bridget Ganley

My 2xgreat grandfather was born circa 1860 (1901 census aged 40, 1911 census has him aged 58).
Headstone for Edward also shows 1860 - 1944.
Bridget shows 1859 - 1913 on the headstone. (39 in 1901 census, 55 in 1911)

I am now stuck as to how to find any older information on either of these people and was wondering if anyone has some good advice as to where I can try looking.

I've tried the following resources
https://www.familysearch.org/
https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/
https://www.findmypast.co.uk/home (I'm only using the free searches on here)

Thanks for any advice.

1901
https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Mayo/Bekan/Larganboy_West/1588963/
First you find Bridget's maiden name by looking up the children's births on Irish Genealogy
for example Patrick
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1900/01992/1766477.pdf

Than you look for the parent's marriage
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1882/10960/8006325.pdf

When you run out of records on Irish Genealogy you move on the parish records if they survive.

Than you look for the parent's marriage
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1882/10960/8006325.pdf

and investigate all witnesses and informants. The witnesses to the marriage are Luke Ganly and Margaret Kilkenny. Are they Edward's brother and Bridget's married sister? It's worth a look.

Thank you for helping me with the great advice on how to search for these records. I can now gather more information and hopefully move my family tree on further.

The examples given look great and I should be able to use them to gather more information.

Many thanks for helping,
Tony

May be happenstance but in case these line up with future finds
Luke is a common name but in close proximity 1901 Liscat, Mayo
(Knock Old Graveyard / d. Oct 1950) with a sister Maria Ganly

https://irishgraveyards.ie/plot?plotno=279&yardid=189&section=A
& again, just in case
There's also a widow Ganley with a son Luke & dau. Delia
1911  Carrowneden (Coolnaha, Mayo)
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QYJB-WDW2
adding:
Here they are 1901 with father Andrew /surname as Gonley
with his brother John T Gonley

From the marriage certificate you know that Edward’s father was Thomas Ganly
This is his death certificate from 1895
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1895/05928/4683404.pdf

Note the address on the death cert (Shanvaghera) and you will find Thomas' widow living there in 1901 census

Bridget McHugh’s father was William
This looks like his death in 1889

Thanks for all these great links. I had found Thomas but not his widow.
I will be taking a look at these over the next few days and adding them to my family tree.

It's great to get this help and it is much appreciated, especailly as I'd hit a bit of a brick wall. I think the different spelling were throwing me. ::)

Many thanks again.

Apologize for the earlier error, as of course John T. is a son...
Here they are 1901 with father Andrew /surname as Gonley
with his brother John T Gonley

and to add to the surname list:
This enumerator took some birth dates?
1901 -Right next door to mother Ellen (Knock North, Mayo)
Ganly-Michael 55 b. July 12 ( Has lost a leg)- Gauly- Mary 50
https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001083851/
You can also find them there in 1911
Their marriage & one bapt. (Aghamore, Mayo) on FamilySearch
