Thomas Bishop, 8th East Lancashires -- but from Southampton??
« on: Saturday 16 November 24 12:34 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to track this man down with only two pieces of evidence. In 1924 he wrote to the War Office asking for help to find his former officer from the 8th/East Lancashires. His address in 1924 was 38 Northumberland Road, Southampton. I got up a list of the Thomas Bishops resident in Southampton in 1921, but none of the seven jumped out at me. 8/East Lancs was a 'New Army' battalion formed in 1914, and although most of its members were Lancastrians, not all were. Has anyone any ideas?

In the latter half of the was it was common for soldiers to be posted to where there were gaps instead of local affiliations.  This was particularly common when wounded soldiers were posted back to front line units.

There's a 1925 Kelly's Street Directory online

https://www.rootschat.com/links/01thv/

Only showing one Tom Bishop at 65 Burlington Road ???

BUT he was at the same address in 1920 so not him  :(

I can't see a Thomas Bishop in the Medal Rolls or Medal Index Cards databases with the East Lancashire Regiment. Could Thomas have been a second given name?

In 1920 & 1925 Arthur Lewis was living at 38 Northumberland Road.  Thomas could have been a lodger.

The trouble with street directories is they only list the head of the household.

Thank you all for responding. Of course he could have been a lodger ...
Thomas was serving with 8/East Lancs in 1914-15, but of course could have been posted elsewhere as the war went on.
The search goes on!

Was the "former officer " named.

Yes, he is my real quarry. What I know about Thomas Bishop comes from a letter he wrote to the War Office in 1924 enquiring about Temp Captain Herbert Montrose Singer, who left 8/East Lancs in 1915.

I am not very knowledgeable ,but often there were other names as example

The 11 th East Lancs was The Accrington Pals, almost wiped out on the first  fday of the battle of The Somme.

Best wishes in your searching .
