Will of 1699
« on: Wednesday 20 November 24 02:23 GMT (UK) »
Attached is portion of a will made by Elizabeth Greene in 1699.  From the word "Item" in the second line I think it says -

Item I give and devise to my daughter Mary Greene all that tenament with all and singular [shappens]? forever situate lyeing & being in Charminster aforesaid which I [purchased]? of ????? Browne & Bartholomew his son to hold to her and her heirs for ever….. after my decease & the determination of the estate or estates therein granted by … of Court Roll according to the custom of the Mannor of Charminster aforesaid, and for want of I hereby my said daughter Mary, I give and devise the same to Beniamin Greene my sonne & his heirs for ever.

Could someone could check this for me and fill in the missing bits please.

Thanks

Having a go at this for practice.

Item I give and devise to my daughter Mary Greene all that tenament with all and singular thappurtenances forever situate lyeing & being in Charminster aforesaid which I [purchased]? of ????? Browne & Bartholomew his son to hold to her and her heirs for ever immediately.after my decease & the determination of the estate or estates therein granted by … of Court Roll according to the custom of the Mannor of Charminster aforesaid, and for want of Issue by my said daughter Mary, I give and devise the same to Beniamin Greene my sonne & his heirs for ever.

I think the “purchased” is correct but written p[er]chased that crossed p thing being an abbreviation of per or par.

Could the word before of Court Roll be ‘copie’?

Could the word before of Court Roll be ‘copie’?
Yes. 'copie'.

It will have been 'copied' into the Manor Court Roll book of Charminster.

Best practise by the paleography experts is to transcribe what is written, and not 'modernise' spelling etc.

So here, immediately is written 'ymediatly'
determination is written 'determinac(i)on'    (this -cion ending was used as much as a -tion ending.)
Granted is written 'graunted'
Custom is written 'custome'

Thank you all for your input into the wording of the will.

It is much appreciated.
