Occupation 1881 census?
« on: Sunday 24 November 24 17:25 GMT (UK) »
Hoping you can help please?

4th line down, this 60 year old is living in the Porter's Lodge, and his occupation is  ?  & Porter.

Any ideas?  I saw the transcription before I saw the image so can't unsee what they transcribed.

Thanks.

Thanks.

That was what the transcription said but to me, the two occupations didn't seem to match.  Assuming he was a porter for the big house, I couldn't see him hawking too.

By the 1891 census he is shown as a labourer, employed, and blind.

Yes it does look like Hawker and Porter - BUT I wonder if the second word is Potter?

Just a thought - as many hawkers dealt with pottery. What were his previous occupations?

Agricultural labourer or just plain labourer.

Also as he was living in the Porter's Lodge I presumed it went with the job?

Just a long shot: could it be a different type of hawker? By which I mean a falconer of some sort.

Ooh there's a thought.  But wouldn't they be called a falconer to avoid confusion?

This is such a coincidence for me actually.

I have recently completed a neighbour's Family Tree - and one of her lines turned out to be Hawkers, right up to the early 1900s.

They did various types of Hawking - Earthenware, Linoleum, Carpet etc - then on the 1911 census - the job was described as Hawker (Birds)! I did wonder whether the birds were alive or dead - ie the latter for cooking purposes.

(I was actually apprehensive about giving this particular tree to my neighbour - I thought she would be horrified - but she found it really fascinating and amusing!)
