Looking for information on Grennan family
« on: Thursday 05 December 24 16:26 GMT (UK) »
Looking for any information on my GG Grandfather John Grennan est birth 1858 in Roscommon
John's marriage certificate has Bryan Grennan as his father. I have been able to find information on Bryan and it looks like he may have been John's brother. Due to this information on Roots Ireland
'John & Michael Grennan was Bryan's brothers (see John Grennan of Tully just southwest of Bellanagare)
information seems available for Bryan 'Parish records for Frenchpark / Ballinagare show that her father, Brian Ó Grianáin  (aka Bernard Grennan) of Bellanagare was a dealer in 1865 and a labourer in 1872'

However I can't find any information re John or Michael and if Bryan was indeed a Brother and not his father who were John's parents . So any information about this Grennan family would be so appreciated as I am hitting a brick wall and I would like to come to visit Roscommon and know it was where my GG started out . Thank you

Could you please advise when John Grennan maried, ie date, where and who to.

Have you been searching in Irish Genealogy  https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ and Family Search as well?

https://www.familysearch.org

These are both free sites

On 18/11/1878 a John Grennan married a Margaret Gillooly.  His father was named as Michael Grennan a farmer. John was 36 and his occupation was pensioner.  (He may have been a soldier?)

John married Maria Duffy in Stoke on Trent in 1876. I have their marriage certificate. I don't know when he moved to England or Maria
I've been using those sites, I have just hit a wall after 12 months of searching

As mentioned in my post John had a brother Michael and either a brother or his farther was Bryan

If John married in 1876 he would have been a minor ie 18 years of age from a poss birthdate of 1858.  Usually a father had to give consent.  Could you advise what the marriage certificate said and confirm what the father's name is from the marriage document itself.

What is this John Grennan's date of death and what was his age then please?

As many Irish followed a naming pattern looking at the names of the children in birth order can give clues as to the names of the parents fathers, mother grandfathers etc.

From Family Search

'A traditional naming pattern was often used by Irish parents until the later 19th century:

First son usually named for the father's father
Second son usually named for the mother's father
Third son usually named for the father
Fourth son usually named for the father's eldest brother
Fifth son usually named for the mother's eldest brother
First daughter usually named for the mother's mother
Second daughter usually named for the father's mother
Third daughter usually named for the mother
Fourth daughter usually named for the mother's eldest sister
Fifth daughter usually named for the father's eldest sister.'

The marriage certificate stated Bryan as the father. John died in 1929 when he was married the certificate says he was 19

I found a distant relation who was seeking information on his great grandfather Bryan Grennan and he had been told Bryan was brother to John and Michael. But given what you have said about naming of the children John and Maria's first child was
Catherine then Bernard so that does fit with my initial findings that Bryan & Catherine were Johns parents

Here is a link to a child, Eliza Grennan,  to Bryan Grennan and Catherine Callaghan  born in 1869 in Frenchpark Co Roscommon.  It is possible that these are the parents and it was not uncommon for parents to have children over a span of years.  So John may have been at the earlier end.

Thank you, I have the names of the other children that Bryan and Catherine had. I have been in contact with Eliza's grandson which has been great. As I knew regardless of anything else we were from the same Grennan family 😊
