Mary Ann Brookes
« on: Tuesday 10 December 24 15:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Mary Ann Brookes married Thomas Archer in St Jude, Birmingham on the 30th June 1873.
I haven't seen a copy of the certificate, but a transcription gives her father's name as James Brookes - no idea of his occupation.

Until I saw this transcription, I was convinced that her father was Charles Brookes and her mother, Mary Owen, who had married in Birmingham on the 3rd October 1852.
Mary Ann was their eldest child, born c 1853/1854.

When Charles married, he gave his own father's name as James Brookes.

I cannot trace a Mary Ann Brookes, born c1853/1854 with a James Brookes, but I can find her quite easily with Charles and Mary.
They were living in Court 12, Great Hampton Row, Birmingham in 1861 and at the same address in 1871, although Brookes was spelt as 'Brooks'

Can anybody find Mary Ann's birth/baptism or with a James Brookes as her father? Or, do you think she may have named her grandfather in error?

Thanks
Sue

Did she have siblings whose marriages you can check for father’s name?

She had Charles, Elizabeth, Arthur (may have died) and Emma.

I shall see if I can find a marriage for any of them.

Thanks!

I have seen grandfathers names put down before and older brothers if they were the “father figure” to the bride but if Charles was still around and brought her up less likely.

Could be mistranscribed I suppose if it was a real scrawl  :-\

Or who was the father of the groom?  Was he Charles or James and there was a mix up.

Several possibilities.

That's interesting, because Charles Brookes was a silver plate worker, so definately sound like another family!

And Charles was living in Hampton Row with his widowed mother, Susannah, in 1841 and 1851, so seems to have stayed at that address.

Mary Ann Brookes (parents Charles and Mary), did have a sister called Elizabeth - she was born c1857, so would only have been around 16 years of age when Mary Ann married.
