I worked in one for a short time,L.M.
Doing Friday and Saturday nights.
The owners were both Geriatric Nurses , but conditions were dreadful.
Most of the staff were kind but with no knowledge of nursing.
It really seemed the owners were just doing it for the money.
Broken lift, hot water dispenser for tea making did not reach boiling .
Soiled sheets piled on the floor at the kitchen door washed with other things like clothes and ——- tea towels, there was no machine dedicated to soiled clothes ,towels and bedding.
A shared room and one lady topped and tailed ,the sink not cleaned and the other lady in the room had to wash in that same washbasin!
Hot Summer evenings and one polycotton sheet on a waterproof mattress cover, it was wet with perspiration so was the resident’s nightie.I sponged it ,put a thick bath sheet on and fresh linen, washed the lady’s back, clean dry nightie, got into trouble from the owners, ( attending to the lady “ out of hours” for a non urgent procedure! ) who never did nights so I told them just what I thought ,———bed sores really deep on the hips of a skeletally thin lady ,no ring dressings to relieve pressure.
Glaucoma drops not administered and out of date anyway .
A very bad odour in one lady’s room ,the drains were investigated ,but she had a gangrenous sore on her foot, bed socks had hidden it from we night staff ,but the day staff ———-?mostly kind but no real knowledge ,or qualifications, no training.Just cheap Labour.
I got into trouble quite often but stood my ground as what was going on was really bad and the owners, husband and wife were both geriatric nurses, so no excuse for such failings.
I left but really don’t want to be in one myself .
I did it as we had an enormous job done to the house, structural, it cost almost as much as the house, we did not want to add it to the mortgage so took second jobs and a legacy from my aunt got it done and paid for in a short time.
I hope I don’t ever have to be in one. Some seem excellent , but still, costly and uncertain as to food, care and treatment.
Money saved to help children and grandchildren slipping away for rather poor care in many cases.
Viktoria.
