Agree with LizzieL.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

That may mean he was illegitimate, but not always, I have found marriages where fathers not recorded, but the couple were both legitimate or one was illegitimate and the other possibly didn't want to have their father recorded but not their spouse's.
Martha was a minor at marriage. Witnesses were Benjamin Senior (groom on the next marriage record) and Thomas Stayton (also witnesses other marriages so possibly parish official).

1851 census has them in Worsbrough - HO107/2333 284 page 10

John is said to be aged 21, born Barnsley and Martha is 17 also born in Barnsley

If I have the right family in 1861 (with Sarah Gill widow - mother in Law). He says he was born in Kingston Place

https://forebears.io/england/yorkshire/barnsley/kingston-place

So that narrows it down
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt

Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott
