Georgian London
« on: Tuesday 24 December 24 12:59 GMT (UK) »

Hi, I'm wallowing (and drowning) in 1700s London with a family of the common sort (no posh names, occupations or titles to help me) so I wondered if anyone had a good source of advice or information to help me?  There's plenty of help for the Victorian period when administration ruled - what about earlier eras?  Any ideas gratefully received.

Thank you.

Can you clarify a bit what you mean?  Are you looking for vital records e.g. births, marriages, deaths?  Or are you looking for more general social history?

What area of London are you interested in?  While London was a big place, it was not as built-up in 1700s as it is now.  Kensington was considered as heading towards the countryside!

Anything would help - post 1834 and there are any number of details to match to be sure you have the right person/family.  That's not the case in the 1700s - baptisms might provide both parents, occasionally mention father's occupation or something close to an address but it's not the rule.  Marriages only give names and little else.  Burials rarely make it clear if the deceased is adult or child - some have C or W or M marked against them - is that form of burial or description (child, widow? cloth or wool?) I have about 8 or 9 possible burials for a William Davison without one hint of the actual age. I don't know if he lived into adulthood, died a child, is the person listed on the land taxes register or none of the above.  See what I mean?  Any ideas gratefully received.  I might be asking for the impossible but who knows?  Someone might have one useful tip to share?

Using the census records may get you back to the late 1700s and specific areas of London to look at.

Then there are things like apprenticeship records.  FindMyPast has transcriptions of London Apprenticeship Abstracts 1442-1850.  Ancestry has freemen papers.

This site might give you some pointers to other websites:

Some records for a few of the livery companies here:

Another useful one:

And don't forget wills - you never know what you may find.
