Benns of West Yorkshire
« on: Thursday 02 January 25 23:14 GMT (UK) »
Just wondered if anyone was looking at the Benns from West Yorkshire?

I have as far back as Great x 3 Grandfather Joseph Benn (possibly born Bradford) who married Rebecca Senior (born Dodworth) in Batley in October 1822.

Joseph died in February 1843 aged 46, but I can find no definitive Baptism/Parents, although general consensus on Ancestry trees appears to be born circa 1797 of Joshua Benn and Ann Blamiers

Similarly, his wife Rebecca Senior, when I first looked her up many years ago, the only likely find was born January 1803 in Batley of Thomas Senior and Ann Spink, and as with Joseph this seems to be accepted as the general consesus on Ancestry. However on the 1851 census she's listed as being born in Dodworth, some 12 miles away. More up to date baptism records now open up the possibility of Rebecca being born in June 1800 of William and Hannah (baptised Silkstone)

Joshua was to be found in North Bierley Bradford on the 1841 census; whilst Joseph and Rebecca were in Beeston Royds Leeds

Anyone?

Benn (Yorkshire), Cock (Ashill, Norfolk), Dickinson (Newton on Trent and Saxilby, Lincolnshire)  Rhodes (Yorkshire), Tew (Shropshire/Staffordshire), Wilks (Yorkshire)

Not any help with his family yet, however you may be interested in a mention in 1842 about a riot that occurred in Leeds:

" Joseph Benn, of Beeston Royds, in the employ of Mr. Holman, identified Joseph Riddlesdin, but could not say what part he took in the proceedings."

Certainly the baptism of Rebeccah SENIOR at Silkstone says the family is of Dodworth. I think it seems pretty likely her parents are William (labourer) and Hannah.

Modified to add:
There is another Rebecca SENIOR baptised at Silkstone in 1804 with parents William and Ann (nee BEAUMONT), however this William is a Clothier, and they are of Hoyland.

Thanks for reply. I'd noticed the 1804 baptism but have discounted as she died aged 5 (bur July 1810)

Thanks again

I was really just noting that if you're looking for a William and Hannah SENIOR, be careful as it seems there were at least 2 couples with this name. (Hannah and Ann often being interchangeable).   ;)

Hi,
Joseph Benn married to Rebecca/Rebekah is my 3x great grandfather too. All I can find is the census, the death certificate and marriage certificate. It’s very frustrating to not be able to get any further back than him. I suspect he wasn’t born where the census said that he was and we are looking in the wrong area.
