1861 census look-up please
« on: Wednesday 14 September 05 02:21 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find SAMUEL MILLS in the 1861 census.  He was born in the 1820's ( I've seen many different dates)  in Bethnal Green, London. He married a woman named EMMA UNDERWOOD in 1861 but I think that may have been after the census was taken.

I would appreciate any help.

Thanks,

1861  RG9/1059  Folio 200 Page 1

1 Frog's Hole, West Ham
MILLS
Samuel  Head  Mar  32  Baker's tool maker  Middx, Bethnal Green
Emma  Wife  Mar  27  Essex, Halstead
George  Son  1  Scholar  Essex, East Ham

They were certainly starting George young on his education!  ;D

Thanks PrueM,

Samuel would naturally think about early education - after all, he managed to marry and have a one year old son in the space of less than one year.  Isn't that clever!!  Hopefully George had a few more clues than his father.

Many thanks,

No worries Esther  ;D

I guess it's possible that they were not actually married at all at the time of the census, or even that they married only slightly beforehand, and that George was born out of wedlock.  I've got quite a few "widows" in my tree who had little children, but really they were single mums and the stigma must have been great for them to lie about being a widow  :'(
