Marriage Certificates
« on: Monday 06 January 25 16:39 GMT (UK) »
Could anyone give me some advice regarding obtaining copies of wedding certificates in particular I am looking to confirm parentage if possible and origins, I have a William Cole birth registered ? or actually born in Dudley 1729 he dies in 1804 in Upper Gornal, he marries Mary Cooke born 1734 in Lower Gornal the marriage takes place at All Saints in Sedgley 22/04/1756, Mary dies 1802 in Gornal Wood, is it likely that the documents could be held in Dudley ?

Prior to the start of civil registration in England and Wales, there were no certificates as such.

For marriages, no parents were recorded prior to 1837 and post that date, only fathers were named until quite recently.  After 1754, the parish of residence was usually entered, but not the parish of birth.

For baptisms, both parents might be named, but many parishes omitted the name of the mother until as late as the 19th century (1813 onwards) when new requirements were placed on record keeping.

Thank you for the info, trying to determine where the family came from and had a Joseph Cole from Halesowen and a Mary Burrows of Sedgley as possible parents but they appear to have been married on Dec 16 1729 and Joseph Cole was Baptised 11/02/1729 so unlikely to be the right parents, William and Mary Cooke look OK but back to the drawing board for his parents..
Thanks for your help

1729 is before the calendar change in 1742.  Prior to 1742 the calendar year started on Lady Day on March 25 so Dec 1729 came before Feb 1729.  So the dates might work.
