William Garden McLeod (1864-1895)
« on: Saturday 11 January 25 18:23 GMT (UK) »
I was looking in familyhistory.org and recently noted that William Garden McLeod born 30 Oct 1864 in St. Nicholas Aberdeen and died Dec 1895 in Whitechapel, London has another piece of info.

There is probate record 28 December 1895 for London, Middlesex naming Johanna McLeod dated 13 Jan 1896.  I would like to know more info about Johanna McLeod and her relationship to William Garden McLeod.  I see there is another William McLeod and Johanna Munro and Mary McLeod in the 1871 census but William Garden McLeod would have been only 7 years old then not 29.

Could anyone lookup the 1891 census or the probate record for me and let me know who Johanna is?

Ref relationship.  It clearly states on the Administration (not probate so no will) that Johanna was "widow"  Those records cannot be looked up but you can download a copy for £1.50

All censuses are free to search on Family Search.  Here is the link to the 1891 census

Just had a look on the Probate website and the entry can be found in 1896 - not 1895.  Website is supposed to allow search under year of death but as he only died end of Dec 1895 they have it filed under date administration was granted.

Thank you for the website.  Before spending GBP1.50 to find something that might just coincidentally seem like my William Garden McLeod is any lookup possible of 1891 census and marriage in England?  The 1871 census for example with William McLeod, Johanna Munro, and Mary was not my family.

The 1891 census is something I don't have and a lookup might clarify the ages of William, aged about 27, Johanna, and anyone else in their family.  Is that possible?  The marriage of my William Garden McLeod to Johanna did not appear to happen in Scotland so and I was wondering if it was in England and if that could be found?

Link to 1891 census is given in my earlier reply.  Free access to all censuses on Family search

I have been looking for a marriage in both England & Scotland but zilch??  www.freebmd.org.uk or www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

The administration entry could conceivably be read 2 ways.  As Johanna is surname McLean & shown as "widow" - the assumption is she is William's widow

However - I have seen other probate/admin entries where they say "widow of the deceased" so she may be his sister in law - widow of his brother or another McLean relative?

Downloading the admin entry may give further info

A Johanna McLeod married in 1897 Pancras

There is a tree on Ancestry for Johanna - doesn't seem to be any marriage mentioned other than the 1897 one.  Looks like they had 2 McLeod children.  Williamina b 1886 Scotland & Isabella Grey McLeod b 1889/90 Scotland

1891 entry for London is on tree but does not show William.  Give me 10 mins to find it
