Patrick Newman
« on: Monday 13 January 25 11:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi All
We are currently engaged in researching education in Campbelltown New South Wales. Our main object is Patrick Newman and his family. Patrick arrived on the ship the Herald of the Morning. He trained as a teacher at St Marys in Sydney. He married Eliza Ryan at St Francis Xavier's Wollongong, then the couple moved to Campbelltown where they taught at St Patrick's school from 1864 until 1880.  Patrick then moved to Campbelltown Public School where he taught from 1880 until 1901. We have Patrick's teaching records and we know that he became a JP after retiring. He died in 1909 and is buried in Campbelltown. We have much information on Patrick and the family. All of the children were born at Campbelltown. All of the surviving members of the family were either engaged in education or the public service. However, direct descendants are very thin on the ground. We would be very excited if we could contact some of those descendants or even  photos of Patrick or some of his offspring. To date we have been unable to locate any of these. We do have a photo of his youngest son William Augustus who was the Administrator of Nauru from 1927 to c1932. William was also a Boer War veteran.
Regards
Wren

You have mistakenly posted on "How to Use RootsChat board (Please don't post requests here)".

Just click on 'report to moderator' and ask for this thread to be moved to the Australia board where it belongs.

Good luck

There are a few family trees on Ancestry for Patrick NEWMAN and Eliza RYAN. You could try contacting the owners? If you don't have access to Ancestry, many libraries have access.

Hi Maddy
Thank you. I've already tried that avenue. This is really just a shot in the dark. Rootschat has been very kind to me in the past. So I just thought I would give it a try.
I am on Ancestry and Find My Past. I also have a subscription to archived newspapers and I have trawled TROVE. I have also researched the war records on the National Archives of Australia. I am also a member of the local historical society which has scant information on Patrick and his family. I am visiting the National Library later this week. I have also been to the State Archives.  These avenues have proven to be somewhat useful. This family contributed so much to generations of Australian society and yet in the town where they spent their formative years they are now generally forgotten and almost unknown.
Warm Regards
Wren

Hi Shire
Yes  I have seen it. The figures are at the top of a culvert and the features are very indistinguishable. They're in a buggy and extremely small and blurry. There were also two Patrick Newmans. One who was further north and  our Patrick. A number of people on Ancestry for quite some time had the two confused. This now seems to have been clarified. There is also a school pic of Patrick in profile at St Patricks Campbelltown. Once again the facial features are unclear
Thanks for taking the time to help
Regards Wren

Have you contacted Barbara Joan (nee Kelly) HORGAN the G-Grandaughter of Patrick?
Currently living in WA if you search her name you will find information about the her and the family.

She is the daughter of Dulcie Heather NEWMAN who married James Henry Livingstone Alured KELLY.
Dulcie Heather NEWMAN was the daughter of William Augustin NEWMAN and Alice May HEATHER.
William Augustin NEWMAN was the son of Patrick NEWMAN and Eliza RYAN.

Hi Merlin
Thank you for your help. Much appreciated. I had been in contact with Barbara. Unfortunately, for some strange reason her number has fallen off my phone. This also happened with several of my other numbers, the joys of modern technology. Moral of the story write everything on paper. I need to do some further exploring in order to retrieve Barbara's contact details.  We had several conversations.  She gave me some great info, but knows very little about Patrick. I shared with Barbara all the info that I had. It was she who alerted me to the fact that  her uncle Jack was a participant in the 1924 Olympics. Truly, they were an amazing family. I'm on my way to Canberra today to view William's photo album from his time in Nauru. The last time I was talking to Barbara she was unaware of this album. I'm just so pleased the National Archives purchased it when it came up for
auction. There is also now a recent entry on Patrick in the Australian Biographical Dictionary. This was done by three people from Australian Catholic University. In his will Patrick left everything to his son Patrick Francis, even though several of his other sons were still alive. I'm tending to think there must have been some dissension with his other sons. However, that is mere conjecture and has no place in the recording of history.
Once again thank you for your information. I need to make a concerted effort to relocate Barbara's information.
Regards
Wren
