Patrick Butler
« on: Saturday 18 January 25 15:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I wonder if anyone can through some light on this man and his children;

Patrick Butler was born in Sunderland around 1873, I think he may have been the son of Peter Butler and his wife, Bridget.

He married Mary Donnelly in Sunderland on the 7th June 1902. I know the date, but not the venue, but guessing it may have been St Mary's RC Church or the Register Office, as Mary gave birth to their first child, Thomas William, on the 28th July 1902.
Mary is easy to trace, born c1880, she was the daughter of William Donnelly and his wife, Mary Crawford.
Patrick and Mary went on to have another child, daughter, Rose Ann, born on the 19th January 1907.
Sadly, Mary died in 1908.
I believe that Patrick was living in 30 Outram Street, Sunderland in 1911 where he was a shipyard labourer - marital status given as 'single.'
A Mary Wardropper (widow), was living in 40 Outram Street at the same time.

Patrick died at sea on the 24th October 1913 (his address given as 15 Sans Street), on his probate record. Probate was granted to Mary Wardropper (widow).
However, the 'deaths at sea' register gives Patrick's address as 40 Outram Street - Mary Wardropper's address.

Neither of his children can be found on the 1911 census - can anyone trace them? However, by 1921, daughter Rose Ann, was living with Mary Wardropper, and Thomas William, was with his mother's sister, Bridget Ann Donnelly, who had married Robert Cuthbertson in 1910.

From then, both children are easy to follow - Thomas William married Mary Carroll on the 24th May 1926, and Rose Ann, married William Swanson on the 15th June 1935.

Anyone find them in 1911 though? Or even confirm their father's identity?

Thanks in advance
Sue

patrick Butler married Mary Ellen Blenkhorn in 1912.
There is a military record fir him - 30 Oultram  Street.

You will have seen that there are two Patrick Butlers born Sunderland in 1872. The relevant marriage certificate would help you.

And still alive in 1939 - I believe he was born on the 18th June 1872, baptised the 20th June, son of Patrick Butler and his wife, Bridget, whose maiden name appears to be Butler too!

Their was another Patrick Butler born on the 15th February 1872, mother's maiden name 'Fallen.'

He is a total mystery!!!

I know - I think we'll have to bite the bullet and buy it.

Just wondered where his two children were though...thought if I found them, it would give me a clue!

The 'death at sea' register gives his year of birth as c1874, place of birth, Sunderland.

This is definitely him, as probate was heard by Mary Wardropper, who then cared for his daughter, Rose Ann.

PS Outram Street is full of Butler families too  ??? ???

Yes i just found a nephew William in 1911 but possibly the one born with no mother’s maiden name rather than your Thomas William.
