Sarah Matthews McClintock and family - Dungannon, Tyrone
« on: Thursday 23 January 25 03:01 GMT (UK) »
Hi all, looking for some help. I've gotten quite stuck with finding Irish records. Most of my experience is with England, Scotland and Australia. I have some family that I'm trying to find out more about.
Sarah Matthews married John McClintock in Dungannon in 1851 - they had John, Thomas and Francis in Dungannon and then moved to Cavan and had Rebecca, Mary, Martha and Emma Margaret. Sarah died in 1898 and John in 1902 in Cavan. I've obtained the marriage certificate and their death certificates. Sarah's father was William Matthews, Painter. I've recently connected her as a sister to a Martha Matthews who emigrated to the US in the 1840s and married Friedrich Heiderstadt. Two of Sarah's daughters emigrated in the 1880s and lived with their aunt Martha. John jnr emigrated to Australia in 1875 and Emma remained in Ireland marrying David Murphy and moving to Rathfryland.
Looking to expand on this family and find more information about the family in Ireland further back if possible. Would greatly appreciate some help or a point in the right direction. :)

OP - you neglected to mention a key point. Their religion, which turns out to be Presbyterian.

Link for their marriage in 1851

Also a hint - many people will have no idea what TYR is. We spell it in full, Tyrone.

Unclear how far back Dungannon Presbyterian records go - church dates to 1723. OP could contact the church directly to ask

Thanks for the few hints there - yes I definitely should've mentioned they were presbyterian - makes a big difference of where to look for Irish records.

Dungannon Presbyterian has records in PRONI - baptisms 1790-1886 and marriages 1785-1844 but have only managed to locate some of the children of John and Sarah Matthews MCCLINTOCK in these records

That induces some thoughts. John and Sarah's fathers both had what I might term urban occupations - mason and painter. Not typically rural. So one might expect that both Matthew and McClintock families were from Dungannon (or similar town) at earlier times. If you can't find births for them or siblings, perhaps they changed religion. Do Church of Ireland records for Dungannon exist at the relevant time?

Just speculation.

How much allowance was made for spelling variations?
McClintock versus M'Clintock
Matthews versus Mathews, etc.

Some electronic databases have to be searched one-by-one for specific spellings. Is that the case with the PRONI databases?
