Where is "Ballinagone"
« on: Saturday 01 February 25 02:01 GMT (UK) »
I'm lost!
Is "Ballinagone" the same as "Ballynahone Beg" townland?
Please see the 1883 death records for three members of the Lappin family for context and handwriting.

Many thanks.

Hi
Lots of mentions in Armagh papers for a Ballinagone.
Mostly Ballinagone, Portadown but also "Ballinagone, Drumcree,Portadown" and in the Portadown News in 1907 "Townland of Ballynagowan or Ballinagone".

Like all good answers this one may be yes, no or 'it depends'. I think the certain money would be on it being related to Ballynagowan

Patrick looks to be 'Ballyoran' with a space between the Bally and the rest of the word.

Might be Ballymoran but doubtful. Patrick was registered by Francis who came from Ballymoran, but Patrick comes from Drumcree

Hugh who registered all three deaths that you linked to, appears to come from Ballynagowan/Drumcree perhaps the gowan part pronounced 'goohan' with aspirated 'H' almost like 'go..on'. Could then be heard as a soft 'gone' by the Registrar

Very sad happenings all round.

ETA this link to the 1901 census shows Lappins at Ballyoran and Ballymagowan

On this link below it says:

Ballinagone', which the 'Placenamesni' website has as a known form of Ballynagowan townland, in Drumcree civil parish: https://www.townlands .

Then on placenamesNI (my first visit) there is oodles of information about Ballynagowan/gone history and variants
