Boer War Medal QSA
« on: Monday 03 February 25 19:04 GMT (UK) »
Good evening all, I have a longstanding mystery concerning my grandfather.
He apparently served in the 2nd Boer war under an assumed name. No one seems to know why or the name he used. Family members remember seeing the medal, and his Death or Glory cap badge (he joined the 17th Lancers). If he had the medal would they have been posted to his address and if so is there anywhere this can be searched for.
I have looked through the medal rolls, but no names stand out as a probable alias.
Any advice welcomed.

Have you searched under the old standby of mother's maiden name? The ideas such as the father's mother's maiden name?, reversing the forenames, using common alternative spellings  such as Dougherty/Doherty, Brown/Browne, Smith/Smyth ect etc. Then there are the ones who registered using older brothers or younger brothers details

Could you pl give us his actual name, dob etc so we can  have a look.  There are some pretty good sleuths on here.

Hi Shanreagh
his name is George James Pye  dob 9/6/1880 in Shadwell. Not many alternative spellings or misspellings of Pye :)

I have a photo of him in 17th Lancers Uniform, and he said when he was about 21 he kissed the Blarney Stone. The Lancers were in Ireland about the the right time I believe. This seems to back up the family story that he served in the Boer War.

He served in WW1 under his real name.

Family surnames Pye White Richardson Lloyd Haynes

A relative said the surname used was Pritchard but, there is only one listed in the medal roll and I have traced him via census and military records and definitely not him.
