William Hulse - Born Northop 1895 - Help needed
« on: Tuesday 11 February 25 13:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I've hit a brick wall in finding any definitive info on who my Great Great Grandfather may be. I'm hoping someone on here has some in depth knowledge of the Hulse family (or families) of the area around Northop.

What I have found so far

Charles Hulse (checked these spellings too - Hults / Hulets) b Farnden, Cheshire circa 1835
married Margaret Davison b Mold, 1823, in 1859 in Birkenhead. They had 2 Children. Mary Hulse b Birkenhead 1860, & Hannah Hulse b Birkenhead 1865.

The Hulse family moved from Birkenhead to Dublin Row, Northop, Flintshire. I don't know exactly when but Hannah had her 3 children there and her sister Mary married and moved away.

The Census of 1871 for Northop shows Charles & Margaret with Mary & Hannah in Northop.
The Census of 1881 for Northop shows Charles & Margaret Hulets on their own in Northop
The Census of 1891 for Northop shows Charles & Margaret Hulse with their Grand Daughters Maggie & Phoebe (Hannahs 3rd child William was born in 1895)
Hannah's children - Margaret b 1885 in Northop, Phoebe b 1886 in Northop and William b 1895 also in Northop.

The 1st missing person I am struggling to find any information on is the partner of Hannah Hulse (and presumably the father of one or more of her 3 children)

Census in 1871 has Hannah living with parents in Northop
I can't find Hannah on the 1881 Census. There are several but none match perfectly.
Census 1891 has Hannah working in Moreton, Cheshire as a servant (without the rest of her family)
Census 1901 Can't find definitively Hannah on any Census
Census 1911 - She is Widowed and Living with her daughter Phoebe (now Ackerley) and their family in Wallasey, Cheshire with her son William.
Census 1921, She is widowed, her and William are still living with Phoebe's family in Wallasey.

Mystery number 2. There is no trace of a birth certificate for William, either on  the GRO or the North Wales BMD. I've phoned the council and have confirmed  they do not hold a birth certificate for him. On his death certificate if confirms is dob as 25/11/1895, in Northop.

So the 2 things I am trying to find out are 1 - Hannahs partner and possible parent of her children, and 2) Williams birth certificate.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks & Regards

Alan Stephens

This may not be the correct William -- but there is a William Hulse born Q/E Dec 1895 in Runcorn Registration District. No mother's maiden name shown on the General Register Office Register - signifying that it was Hulse.

Runcorn isn't far away from the areas where Hannah had been.

Thanks - I'll check it out. If William was born in Northop, would Hannah have had to register him in that district or doesn't / didn't it matter as long as he was registered?

The child should be registered in the District in which they were actually born.

I only suggested that birth as it was the correct name, correct quarter - and the mother's maiden name must be Hulse (as it wasn't shown on the GRO Register).

It may be worth obtaining an immediate digital copy from GRO if only to 'eliminate from enquiries'. A digital copy is only £3.

Thanks, that's what I thought but I wasn't sure. I contacted Flintshire council and they have found no records for William. I've also checked the North Wales BMD with no luck. I tried that entry in the GRO. It was close but not the same person, though the mothers name was Anna and she (and William) were from Frodsham.

How strange! Especially as the mother's name was Anna (surname presumably Hulse?)

It would be boring if it went smoothly!

Small detail but I think your family lived in Northop Hall also knowns a Pentre Moch rather than Northop.
My COTTERILL family came from there. I had though G Gdad was from New Brighton on the Wirral and was about to visit there when a man in Hawarden record office asked me "which New Brighton". Turned out there was also a New Brighton down towards Wrexham and also one between Northop and Mold. So I took some photos of the tiny old pit village south of Northop. Then later found the real New Brighton (sometime called Brighton Row) was actually a row of houses in Pentre Moch. See attached map.
And your Dublin or Dublin Row is also a row of houses in Pentre Moch.

Here's an extract from a history of Penter Moch by Alan Peers
"About 1790 the Dublin and Irish Coal Company began to mine in the area. To house the workers (mainly local people) rows of houses were built e.g. Dublin Row along side Bryn Gwyn Lane and Brighton Row. The area took Irish names, Dublin, Cork, Vinegar Hill. The early mines were primitive, sometimes men were lowered by a basket and found their way about with the help of a lighted candle. Sometimes a horse with a winch was used. The mining was widespread. A tram road was constructed to take the coal to Connah’s Quay docks. To cater for the demands of the Buckley Area, the Buckley and Connah’s Quay Railway was opened in 1862 for goods traffic. "

What a great old map Spelk - and wonderful, historical information.

I am still thinking the birth for William in Runcorn Reg. District may be the correct one - it's a coincidence that the mother is shown as Anna Hulse (and Annie Hulse on the baptism) - as opposed to Hannah. Also it's not that far from Northop area.

I wouldn't rule it out - she may just have gone away from home to give birth.
