Where is the alleged birth in 1893 Southampton for Joanna/Johanna Crimmins - nothing on freebmd.

EDIT

Joanna Cremmins   March qtr 1893 Southampton 2c  1

A Johanna & Michael Murphy are on 1932 ER's in Liverpool

A Johanna Murphy (no age shown) was buried 27.6.1961 Ford Cemetary Liverpool (Catholic Cemetary) but can't find a corresponding death reg in Liverpool so could be the Birkenhead Johanna

An online tree suggests the name Cecilia.

Try searching the 1921 census for Cecilia with a mother Johanna in Southampton.

Thank you, I had seen that and had found a record at Long Edge Rd in Soton on the 1921 Census, but dismissed it because
a) her name was Sydney, just Sydney; there was no Cecilia in the name
b) the father's name for the 1921 census record that comes up is Peter Murphy, not Michael Murphy.

See SS

The trouble with names is that you can call yourself what you like providing it wasn't for fraudulent purposes.  Some people were very fluid with names.

Cecilia does have younger brothers called Peter & Michael.

1939 marriage.
Sydney ATTHEWS (male) married Sydney KERR (female). What are the chances of two Sydneys meeting and marrying?! The 1939 Registrar is also very confused by it, but as you say , the dob is correct and the earlier marriage evidences it.

Yes, I had also considered that. It's just that there were no other clues on there.

I think the 1921 is the correct family. Michael was originally a seaman and is now a Union delegate for that trade (although he's called Peter on this census!)

Cecilia may just have been Sydney's baptismal Christian name.

I know it's odd - but there are too many coincidences with the 1921 census for it not to be the correct census.

The marriage found by Cathy looks good together with the 1939 entry for her.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

I do see your point. I'll have another look at it. I did find it before I posted.

Can anyone find any of the rest of the family in Wandsworth? Merchant Navy tended t run in families. If Peter/Michael was her stepfather and a union delegate for mercantiles, then why did his stepdaughter Sydney/Cecilia end up in Wandsworth, London, to marry?

The boys could have enlisted in the Forces. If so, they wouldn't show on the 1939 register.
