George Sneddon Campbell Torthorwald
« on: Monday 17 February 25 13:57 GMT (UK) »
Hi all, I'm looking for some help in clearing up some confusion in regards to my 3 x Great Uncle George Sneddon Campbell born 21 Oct 1838 Torthorwald to John Campbell and Margaret Sneddon.

His death certificate (died 28 June 1905) from SP states he was married to an Elizabeth King and it states his son James Campbell was present at his death.

I haven't been able to find a marriage certificate for George and Elizabeth King.

Some trees on ancestry have him as the father of the following children (I know not to be trusted without verification)

John King 1861
Thomas William King 1865
Janet Campbell King 1869 (I do have a DNA connection to a Janet Campbell King on ancestry)
James Campbell King 1872

I purchased the birth certificate for James Campbell King and Janet Campbell King, there is no father listed and states illegitimate for both - assuming George Sneddon could be the father as she has given them the middle name Campbell?

George and Elizabeth King can be found living together on the 1891 census in Torthorwald. Prior to this George is always living at home with his parents John and Margaret.

Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated.

ADDITION

The marriage of Janet Campbell King to her husband William Rae Murray states her parents as George Campbell labourer and Elizabeth Campbell M.S King

There's a Campbell/King marriage dated 1876 in Burnley, Yorkshire - it does seem a little out of range in terms of distance, but in the absence of anything else it might be worth a go to either confirm or rule it out.

Thanks for the suggestion but there is nothing to suggest that they were in Yorkshire at any point.

Investigating further on ancestry it seems she had children with two other men, unmarried. Just purchased her death certificate it states she was single. Her son James Campbell is present at her death.

Elizabeth King was a widow when she married nee' Manley and she married William Hodgon.

Thanks for the suggestion but there is nothing to suggest that they were in Yorkshire at any point.

Given there was nothing to indicate where Elizabeth was from, I was taking a guess that they may have travelled south of the border to get married. But it was a bit of a long shot in that marriage being the correct one.

By the way, Burnley is in Lancashire.

"The district Burnley spans the boundaries of the counties of West Riding of Yorkshire and Lancashire" - from FreeBMD.

I chose the wrong one. Thanks for the correction.
