Hi
John Goodfellow Hogg was born in 16 Market Street, Hexham on the 23rd March 1906, the illegitimate son of Jane Ann Hogg (a domestic servant). She registered the birth herself on the 1st May 1906.
The child was baptised on the 17th June 1906, mother's name given as 'Janet' Hogg.
The 1911 census appears to show him living in 21 Prior Terrace, Hexham , where he is listed as being a grandson to the head, John Hogg (bc1854), and his wife, Mary Ann (B c1858).
John Hogg married Mary Ann Smith in Hexham during the June quarter of 1877, and did not, as far as I can see, have a daughter named Jane or Jane Ann.
John Goddfellow Hogg enlisted with the East Yorkshire Regiment in September 1921 and named his mother, Jane Hogg of 63 Wellington Street, Newcastle, as his next of kin.
He married Janet Donnelly in Hexham Parish Church on the 4th June 1931. His next of kin was subsequently 'updated' on his military record, and his mother's name 'Jane Hogg' was crossed through and replaced with the name 'Mary' Hogg and the address 21 Prior Street, Hexham!
The 1939 register finds him and Janet still living in Hexham (he was a rural postman), although he did serve during World War Two, earning a military medal.
He died in Bradford in 1972.
But who was his mother, and how are the Hogg family from Prior Street related to him?
Sue (baffled)
