Need help identifying possible colliery of John Hughes, Heolfach, 1872
« on: Friday 21 February 25 22:12 GMT (UK) »
Ancestor John Hughes died May 1872 smallpox, 9 days duration.  Notice of Interment by Burial Board lists occupation as "Collier Heolfach."  Death registration in Ystradyfodwg, Pontypridd states he died Green Hill, small pox, occupation coal miner.  Informant Wm Morgan in attendance at death resided Green Hill.

1871 Census (1 yr prior) lists John Hughes address as Ynysgau Road, Hamlet Clydach, occupation coal miner.  No Wm Morgan living with family.

I'd like to determine possible colliery he worked in, as well as address where he died.  Was Green Hill a location for small pox victims to be cared for or quarantined?

There's a road called Green Hill in Ystrad Rhondda

https://historicplacenames.rcahmw.gov.uk/placenames/recordedname/e0d73af0-692a-4663-80a1-c0add8abb533?v=Green%20Hill

Looks to be quite close to where John was living in 1871 (given Bodringallt Farm was a neighbouring property)

There's a couple of newspaper ads in the late 1870s mentioning a Daniel Roderick of Green Hill, Ystrad

On the 1881 census he's in a house called Sunny Cottage - next properties being Ynysgai.

So looks like the right area?

Heolfach translates as Short Road. I have not found it, but most street names on the old maps in that area are in English.

As MB points out correct area

View of area in 1940s

This is the area map of the chapel you see in above link
https://coflein.gov.uk/en/site/10344/

Nearest colliery, now long gone, would be Bodringallt, as in the link MB provided for Green Hill.

There were others within Ystrad  (Heol Fach, where he was working), mostly just called Ystrad today

Gelligaled Colliery   opened   1856 owner   V. L. Lewis
Tyntyla Level      1856   Robert Parsons   Ystrad
Bodringallt Level      1856   D. Jones & D. James   Ystrad

Hope this helps

Thank you for all the information and resources.

Yes, it looks like Green Hill was in area John Hughes lived 1871--still a mystery why his residence at death was Green Hill and not Ynysgau with his family.  I'm still speculating it had something to do with smallpox illness.

Possibly Wm Morgan was living at Green Hill. John maybe tried to protect his family from a contagious illness and moved himself out and away from them.

I overlooked a news article in my records that explains residence.  Not sure of date of news article or name of newspaper, but on 15 April (year?) "administration of effects of late John Huhges late of Heolfach Ystrad Rhondda ...who died 24 May 1872 ...was granted at Llandaff to Rachel Hughes of Greenhill-row Heolfach Ystrad Rhondda, Widow."

Does the Greenhill-row Heolfach sound like the Green Hill road identified on the map by Mabel?

Next question: need help identifying where residence of John Hughes and family 1871 census was:  p 44 of census, parish Ystradyfodwg, Hamlet Clydach, Ynysgau or Ynysgou Road or Street.  I've located an area called Clydach and Clydach colliery, but no road or street by that name

thank you.

It looks like if Rachel was recorded living at Green Hill around 1872 then the family must have moved after 1871 census. It is the same area as map MB linked.

If you go to the 2nd map link I posted you can see where Ynysgau Street is, lower down from Green Hill and to the right. Not very far between addresses.

At that time Ystradyfodwg, now called the Rhondda, was mapped in 4 district hamlets. The individual hamlets held a number of villages. Not to be confused with Clydach Vale which was and still is a village in itself, and at that time also came under the area of Clydach hamlet. Hope that makes sense. See link.

So Wm Morgan was likely a neighbour/friend, and looks like John died at his family home, as all appear to have address of Green Hill, at his time of death.
