Birth of William BUTCHER
« on: Thursday 27 February 25 07:06 GMT (UK) »
Hello to you all.  Greetings from the Sunshine Coast of Queensland, Aust.
Have finally got back in to my Family History.
Looking for the BIRTH DATE of WILLIAM BUTCHER.  On 31 Aug 1834 BENJAMIN BUTCHER marr CATHERINE YARRANTON at St Nicholas Church, Brighton, Sussex.  First child PRISCILLA was bapt 2 Apr 1837 parish Angmering Ssx; second child BENJAMIN bapt 27 Jan 1839 parish Patching Ssx, father a Groom; third child WILLIAM bapt 26 Mar 1843 parish Patching Ssx, father a Groom.
I have twice sent for (and received from GRO) copies of Wlm's Birth Certificate (from info I thought was correct - St Caths 1843, Mar qtr, Worthing dist, folio 7, page 541), only to find that the Certificate was incorrect (giving Wlm's mother as CAROLINE HERRINGTON).
I sent an Enquiry to GRO, only to be told they had performed an extensive search and they've only been able to locate one entry that matched most of the info I provided.  They also contacted the local Register Office where entry was registered, and they confirmed the same HERRINGTON surname of the mother.
I have been given another possibility for WILLIAM's BIRTH - 1842, Dec. qtr, Brighton dist, folio 7, page 260).  Can anyone check this out to see if the mother's name is CATHERINE YARRANTON on this entry.  It would help me to order the correct one this time.
It would be much appreciated.

If you register for the General Register Office website you can search the index and it will give the mother’s maiden surname against the entry.

Not all births were registered at that time so a certificate may not exist

I suspect that the Herrington one could be yours wrongly transcribed by the person who issued it.  Who does it name as the father

Looking at the 1841 census Catherine appears with Benjamin's parents and 2 children. It looks to me as though the mothers maiden name has not been shown on either of the below.

BUTCHER, BENJAMIN       -
GRO Reference: 1839  M Quarter in WORTHING  Volume 07  Page 480

BUTCHER, WILLIAM       -
GRO Reference: 1843  M Quarter in WORTHING  Volume 07  Page 541

mmn looks like Herrington

Since the marriage took place in 1834, there is no father named.  The witnesses are of no assistance either.  Catherine signed her name and it is clearly Yarranton.

Experiment with saying it out loud in a variety of accents, it is not far from Herrington to Yarranton, if you drop the 'h' as might happen in Sussex.  Perhaps the registrar decided that Yarranton really ought to have the H  ???

Many thanks to you all for taking the time to help with my query.
It looks as if this is one of those times when I have to accept that the mother's name was not written down correctly on the Birth Entry.  (Although I do wonder where the information comes from when a birth entry is recorded on a Certified Copy).
All the other early info I have on WILLIAM BUTCHER states his mother is "Catherine" - including his Baptism in the Parish of Patching in 1843, page 30, No 237 - "March 26th; William son of Benjamin & Catherine Butcher; abode Patching; profession Groom; William Nourse Curate."
So, thank you again.  It's hard to accept the info on the Certified Copy of the Entry of Birth, when you know it is not correct.  But I will or I'll have myself in a knot unnecessarily.
Carol B.

It looks to me as though the mothers maiden name has not been shown on either of the below.

Is that because the registrar wrote late Herrington, instead of formerly?

Carol could perhaps get the (instant) digital image of Benjamin's birth registration. Only £3 from the GRO. See if it says Yarranton for the mother on that.

Thank you for your reply.  I already have a Certified Copy of the 1839 Entry of Birth for Benjamin Butcher (William's brother) which gives "Catherine Butcher late Yarrendon" as the mother.
It is the record of WILLIAM BUTCHER's Birth that has become a problem.
I will go back into GRO and attempt to do as you requested - I don't have a lot of confidence when it comes to computers!
Thank you. Carol
