Joseph Patrick MOORE - RWF
« on: Thursday 27 February 25 14:40 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm trying to figure out the service number or any other information relating to my grandad's brother's military service during and/or around WWII.

Unfortunately, I know next to nothing (apologies). I'd like to order my great-uncle's service records, but I didn't want to attempt this without a service number.

Here are my great-uncle's details:

Joseph Patrick MOORE (known as Joe).
B. 4th April 1908 in Manchester.
Spent most of his childhood living in Earlestown / Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire.
At some point, I believe Joe permanently moved to the greater Wrexham area, although he may also have lived in Newtown, Powys.
Joe was a stone mason. I believed he moved to the Wrexham area for work.
At some point, he became a member of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers.
Died 28th April 1991.

Joe married in 1927 and divorced in 1941. I believe Joe subsequently had a partner named Ada.

Any help or guidance would be appreciated.

Many thanks, Rowan Tree 🌳

P.S. I've included a photo of Joe.

There's a record of a Joseph Moore, 3649359 Pte who attested into the Royal Welsh Fusiliers on 10 August 1926. His age was given as 18 years and 168 days, which appears to fit with the date of birth  you gave.
He attested at Warrington, and his civilian trade was collier. His place of birth was stated to be Charlton  on Medlock, Manchester. His next of kin was his mother Edith Annie [no surname recorded, so presume Moore] of School Street, Earlstown, Lancs.
If these details sound right, they are sufficient to request his service record.
The original entry is taken from a Transfer-In book held by the Royal Welsh Fusiliers Museum, with a image of it on FindMyPast.

You are an absolute super star 🌟

Thanks so much! I was getting a little frustrated looking for details of Joe.

All those details you mentioned are spot on.

I already knew Joe was in Wales in 1927 because that's when and where he married. But I wondered if he'd been a soldier at this time also. And I wondered how long he'd been in Wales before he married.

Attesting at Warrington makes sense as I believe the nearest barracks would have been the peninsular barracks in Warrington.
I didn't know he'd ever been a collier, but there were plenty of coal mines in and around Newton-le-Willows.
Charlton on Medlock is Chorton on Medlock in Manchester.
Joe's mum was, at that time, Edith Annie Tither nee Maddocks (formerly Moore).
The address of 7 School Street had been the Moore home since 1916.

I'm made up. I'm going to order Joe's service records now.

Thanks again.
