Thompson Family / North Bay , nipissing , emigrated
« on: Wednesday 12 March 25 01:21 GMT (UK) »
Good Morning Everyone , i was wondering if you could help as i feel like ive exhausted ancestry and am now completely stuck  and due to being in the UK struggling to answer some questions on the family and work out where i can take the line from here.

The Main questions are :
- confirming where james travelled in to canada from so i can try and work out a birth certificate to establish him mum/dads details
-marriage certificate and confirm actual details of his wife  so i can explore that geneology line
- find out when harry and gordon died and if they have any children
-establish when William left  canada to marry ellen

Harry Thompson (Great Great Grandad) was born in Scotland  (DOB unknown and no further details at this time, he would have gone to india at some point)

According to James Thompsons (Great Grandad)records his mother is called Mary (Great Great Grandmother) and she was born in Scotland, however according to his death certificate her surname was unknown, her father was  born in Ireland and her mother in scotland

James Thompson (Great Grandfather) birth: 02/12/1864, according to his death certificate and census records he was  born in India. However his obituary says he was born in South Wales.

His death certificate confirms that he emigrated to Ontario and in the 1921 census it confirms he emigrated in 1882, I’ve checked on the canadian gov records website and on their passenger lists , there were 3 james thompsons who came in 1882:
1/ 2- on the Nova Scotian ship via halifax on 1882-12-00
3- On the Brooklyn ship via Quebec on 22/5/1882

I cant work out which one and whether he travelled from India or from the UK :/

According to history notes at this time was the introduction of the The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) in 1882,

He married in 1903 but i cant find a marriage certificate and there are multiple spellings of her name as Kathleen/Catherine and records show her last name recorded 3 ways  Franklin/Faughnan/Turney (Great Grandmother), she was born in pembroke, Ontario, (more details on her below)

When he was 40 years old he is recorded on the 1911 Canadian census as residing at 35 Sherbrook, North Bay, with his with Catherine Thompson/ Kathleen Thompson, (29), and 3 children Harry Thompson (5) , Gordon Thompson (3) and William Thompson (2).
All children are listed as being born in Ontario and all of the family are listed as being Irish Roman Catholics with Canadian Nationality.

His obituary states that he opened a billiards room (left) on the Queens block facing main street,

He passed away on 03/04/1925 at 29 Main Street, West,  and died due to angina Pectoris , He is buried in North Bay St. Mary's Cemetery (Roman Catholic Church ). He was buried 06/04/1925 in Block C, Plot 79, Grave 2.

Kathleen (Great grandmother) was born in July 1881, date unknown, When looking at Kathleen her last name is unclear in terms of Maiden Name , there are two potentials :

Kathleen Franklin : this maiden name is on Gordons  Marriage certificate to Dorothy as the details of the bridegrooms mother, however it is noted that the witnesses appears to have the other questionable last name ‘ Mr James Turney and Miss Gar…. Turney’ (potentially an  uncle/aunt?)

Kathleen Faughnan- this name is used in the obituary for James and also states she resides in Pembroke, Ontario.

In regards to their sons:

Gordon Lawson Thompson born in April 1908 in Ontario, he was married on 12/11/1930  to Dorothy Marie Galbraith, Dorothy was from York Country in Ontario, i dont have any further information on when gordon died and if he had any children

Harry Thompson born in April 1906 in Ontario , no further details could be found on him

William  Thompson (Grandad) was born on 09/04/1910 in Canada. He is recorded in the 1911 Census as residing in Nipissing , also within the 1921 census , at this point he is listed as a scholar, He married Ellen Grace Bland in January 1953 in Islington , so appears to have returned to the UK at some point between 1921 and 1953 but i cant find anything. He passed away in 1973/1974  in London.

Any help would be so appreciated !

Hello and a warm welcome to RootsChat.

I agree with the poster on your other thread that the surname of Catherine/Kathleen is probably
Faughnan or something close to that.

Here is the marriage of James and Catherine. This is the Registrar’s copy. Image available on ancestry on 2 consecutive pages.

It provides James’ mothers maiden name for you.

James Thompson
Age 34
Residence when married North Bay
Place of birth Ireland
Bachelor
Occupation Hotel Keeper
Names of parents Henry Thompson and Mary Ann Lawson
To
Catherine Faughner
Age 23
Residence when married Toronto
Place of birth Toronto
Spinster
Names of parents Bernard Faughner and Catherine Tierney
Witnesses (?) Moffit of North Bay and Jessie Rafferty of Toronto
On 10 Oct 1904 at Toronto
By Licence
Married by J J McCann
Religious designation for both is RC
Date of registration 13 Oct 1904

On the subject of children for Gordon…

Canada has strict privacy laws and most births are protected for 100 years or more. One would need to look for newspaper notices of births or parents deaths, or other means to learn about children.

You now have Harry’s death and other info on your other thread.

I am going to link your other thread here.

William Thompson (Grandad) was born on 09/04/1910

Where did you get that date from?

The Canadian way to write the date would be in the format
YYYY - MM - DD.

The 1911 census gives William Thompson born Sept 09 ?

So was he born on the 4 th September 1909?

Anc tree lists -

James William Thompson -9 April 1906 - 1974  (aged 68 years)
Registration District   London City   Greater London
Volume   14 Page   0892

If James Henry Thompson was born 6 April 1906 - James William Thompson would not have been born 3 days later  :-\

The birth record for Gordon - Joseph Gordon Thompson

Ontario, Canada, Roman Catholic Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials, 1760-1923

Joseph Gordon Thompson -10 December 1907 baptised 7 January 1908 North Bay, Ontario.

Father    James Lawson Thompson
Mother    Catharine Faughnan

Ontario, Canada, Catholic Church Records (Drouin Collection), 1802-1967 (same dates)

Joseph Gordon Thompson -10 December 1907 - 7 January 1908

The 1911 census for Gordon quotes born April 1908.  The marriage for Gordon Lawson Thompson 12 November 1930 indicates he was 21 years old - so born 1909  :-\

Baptism for William. 1909.

Willam Leonard
Born 09 April 1909
Baptized 26 April 1909
Father James Henry Lawson (alias Thompson) (that’s what the image says)
Mother Catherine Faughnan
At Cathedrale l’Assomption in North Bay

From Ontario, Canada, Catholic Church Records (Drouin Collection). Image is on ancestry indexed as Lawson, not sure about familysearch.

So date of birth appears correct on FreeBMD but wrong year. And a different name too. I think a lot of people would find these sort of differences somewhere in their family tree.

Very interesting family!
