Parkinson's Disease
« on: Friday 14 March 25 02:22 GMT (UK) »
I am interested in the Powells of Devynock (Deffynog) e,g descendants of David Powell b Abt1722 Father of Elinor Powell b 1746 Devynock. I am a descendant through my mother's line. I have Parkinson's Disease (PD). In some cases there is a genetic basis. Including myself I have had contact with seven other close Powell family members. I am also a physician who understands genetics; I have a strong suspicion that the gene for PD started in the Powells of Defynnog. If anybody with a similar lineage knows of any others with PD I would be interested to hear

Hi
Interesting topic!

I am also a descendant of this line, via David Powell born 1745, brother to Elinor.
Elinor also married a Powell  but of Cwmpadest.
No incidence of Parkinson at all in my family connections.

Do you have your DNA on Ancestry perhaps?

Yes we have common ancestry. My tree goes back to the same David Powell. My auntie Cynthia (aged 93 years) in South Wales has the middle name Elinor. I have enrolled my DNA via Ancestry so you should be able to cross check. My name is David Brian Jones

Hi
only saw your answer today.
I can't find you under David Brian Jones either as a DNA match or an Ancestry member.
Is it possible you have only recently added to Ancestry? It sometimes takes time for them to update their databases, especially over Bank Holidays such as Easter.

I do have a DNA match with someone who has a Thomas Powell b Devynock, farmer, 1816-1891 married to Alice, in their tre but where this Thomas fits in. I don't know. The User hasn't been online in quite a while.

I have been on Ancestry for over a decade. I think my user name for Ancestry is dbjones333. My DNA should be there as well and linked to my tree.

Thanks for your helpful response, I was able to find you and your tree.
BUT we don't show as DNA matches.
Our common ancestor is I think 10 generations back. DNA cannot lie but nevertheless I'm not sure if Ancestry's DNA tools are tuned highly enough to match us!
My paper trail for the Powells is in my opinion 100% correct.
I presume you have seen the attached image before? From The History of Brecknockshire by Theophilus Jones
My David Powell b 1745 (Elinor's brother) only had one child (David Walter Powell) which has made things simpler, less to confuse!
He had 4 daughters (2 were born after this pedigree was composed) and after his death my connection to Devynock ends, his widow and the daughters disperse through marriage to Cardiff, Swansea and Monmouthshire.
DNA, confusing stuff!

Thank you for your help. I agree your data on the Powell is intact and complete.  For me the "split" in the family tree occurred after Walter Morgan (1831 - 1879). The two main branches of Powells were Walter John Powell (1900 - 1935) and William James Powell ((1897 - 1964), my maternal grandfather. I have found seven cases (myself included) of Parkinsons Disease - all descendants from Devynock on Willam James Powell side but NONE on other branch.
