Was her name McCum?
« on: Monday 17 March 25 13:55 GMT (UK) »
Hi folks
I am looking to see if anyone can help me with this!

I think Charles Cowan was married to Eleanor McCum but can’t evidence the McCum maiden name.
This information is on Ancestry!!
Eleanor died in 1888 and I have her death certificate.

I know they had five children.
1. George Cowan1840–1924
2. Alexander Cowan 1848–1926
3. Susan Cowan 1855–
4. Anne Jane Cowan 1858–1932
5. Catherine Cowan 1860–1915

Unfortunately, birth records in Ireland are only available from 1864.
The Presbyterian Church in Convoy, is where they would have been members.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I realise this does not answer your question, but just had a general look of the surname in the England & Wales GRO Index on Free BMD 1838 to 1900 and only one! Not checked Index Register image.

But a few 'Maccum' Birth & Death surnames, mainly in the Registration District of Bedford, England.

Hi
Thanks for your feedback. It’s very possible that this is a misspelling!

I think you need to try and get an image of Eleanor's marriage and see what you make of it, yourself?

There are some terrible errors on Ancestry where people don't get the paperwork, or assume, or copy the error of another.
 ---------------
Just looked at a 30th August 1858 Marriage at St Stephen's Church, West Derby, Lancashire, listed on F M P as Margaret McCum.

A witness has signed McCRUM and a closer look at her name and actual signature, it looks like it also reads McCrum.

Added: I suppose the marriage was before Civil Registration?

If Charles and Eleanor married at Convoy Presbyterian Church then there will be no marriage record. Civil registration of non-Catholic marriages started in 1845 but the register for Convoy only starts in 1846.
https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/sites/default/files/2024-12/Guide-to-Church-Records-October-2019.pdf (see page 165)
Is this your Eleanor's death in 1888? Ellen Cowan, widow of Charles Cowan labourer, informant daughter Cassie (Catherine)? Townland is Aghagalt (Convoy civil parish) which comes under Stranorlar registration & sub-registration district.

Aughagault is another spelling variation-
https://www.townlands.ie/donegal/raphoe-south/convoy/convoy/aughagault/

Now, I found a possible maiden name for Eleanor/Ellen. Firstly, I want you to say McCrum out loud several times (putting emphasis on second part- Mc CRUM). Then say it out loud softening the two Cs (like MacRUM).
Now see death of George Malcom in 1871 in the same townland-
https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/files/civil/deaths_returns/deaths_1871/020774/7287706.pdf
A few others-
William Malcolm born c1836 died 1917-
https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/files/civil/deaths_returns/deaths_1917/05202/4437693.pdf
Mary Malcolm wife of William-
https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/files/civil/deaths_returns/deaths_1903/05662/4594426.pdf

Did any of the children marry or die outside of Ireland?

Marriage of Ann Jane Cowan to James Bustard gives witnesses as James Malcom and Susan Malcom-

On the 12th January 1888, 66 years, Widow of Charles Cowan, Civil Death Register entry, Stranorlar County Donegal

The informant was a CASSIA or CASSIE Cowan, DAUGHTER, Aughagalt
[not sure how place name spelt, place not familiar to me and can't find it on net, to check].

Aughagault, Donegal.

Aughagault someone has spelt it?

I posted a link to the actual death record and a link to the townland (Aughagalt, Aghagault, Ahigalt, etc.) in reply #5.Daughter was Cassie (a nickname for Catherine).
